So I am considering getting the Alien Bees wireless stuff: CSRB receiver and CST trigger. Around US130.
Has anyone bought from them with shipping to Canada before? What do you pay upon receiving the shipment from UPS, any additional duties/fees? Is there a way to avoid those?

The website isn't quite clear about this.

if there is an option for USPS (Us postal service) i think you can avoid extra fees.

it is funny how shipping via UPS guarantees that you'll at least pay sales tax while getting it through canada post is much more lax on the tax/duty thing.

UPS Worldwide Saver to Canada is the option I choose to avoid paying high brokerage fees. Last time I put in "happy fathers day" as a note and AB even declared it as a gift so no taxes. ;)

With UPS Worldwide Saver the brokerage fees are already included in the shipping price.

My last shipment I bought a vagabond II so the value was around $300US

And AB is really prompt with their shipping. I usually get the package in 2 to 3 days tops - now that's service.

that's correct, in addition if you want to save more try to organize few more poeple for joint purchase, not only you will save on shipping but also my get additional discount on volume. I did it a while back here on TPMG and 3 people combined the order.

I've also been looking at getting a set of cybersyncs - if you want to split shipping, get in touch.

Wouldn't you still have to pay the Canadian/Provincial taxes on the items, even if duty/brokerage fees are already paid with shipping?

There is no duty on Alienbees items as they are made in the US and fall under nafta...you will have to pay GST no matter which shipping option you choose...as has been mentioned, brokerage is included in the UPS Worldwide Saver but not in the UPS Ground Standard...I found that the brokerage would pretty much eat up the difference in price between the two options, so I went with the Worldwide Saver and received my shipment two days later...
