A friend of mine is getting a 50D and wondering if the 18-200 is worth the extra $300 which could be spent on a flash or other accessories. The camera will be mainly used for family photos. Thanks,

For family photos and/or general photography you can't beat the versatility of something like an 18-200 lens. Personally I would get the 18-270 Tamron version but it's bit more money.

if he has the money to shell out, the 18-200mm sounds like a great range on a crop body. when i used my 40d, i didn't play much with the 28-135mm before moving on to other lens and i've never messed around with the 18-200, but i've only heard good things about it. i would think the 28-135mm would do just fine for "family photos" though. =P

for family photos 17-85 max, 50D for family photos is too much if you ask me, it's just a waste of great equipment, tell him to get a point and shoot instead and get the family to Disneyland or something

well, I unno about P&S, if your using em for toddlers or candids where the kids are going wild a P&S AF isnt probably going to cut it, not to mention the relatively slow operation. Anyways 18-200, very useful all around, haha for me to get 18-200 I have to switch between 3 lenses.

Anyways you don't need to go whole hog tho like to start, I'd get a lower model DSLR, 30D or 40D would be good. But this isnt what the thread is about soo... ignore that.
