Hey All --

I have the opportunity to take some pics at the Ottawa Bluesfest of one of my all-time favorite musicians and am wondering which of my lenses to use.

The lenses I own are:

17-85mm IS USM F4-5.6
50mm F1.8
10-22mm IS USM F3.5-4.5
55-250mm IS F4-5.6

I only have three songs to take pics and will be in front of the stage. I am unable to use flash. I was thinking of using the 17-85mm and 50mm. If I decide to rent, which would be ideal?

Thanks!

Neil

is it at night? is it indoor? if so that means there will be poor lighting conditions. you'll want something fast (1.2 - 2.8)

are you stuck in that one position up front? if so you'll want to consider a zoom.

how far are you from the stage? and what type of shots are you going for? if it's a band and you want to get them all in, you'll want something fairly wide. i don't know canon's lineup in the wide end, but you'll want something wider than 24.

do you want more close up shots of just the musician? consider a 70-200 2.8. it is a long lens so you may find it limiting if you're upfront.

from your kit, i would use the 17-85 for it's versatility in the wide and long end

Indoors or outdoors?

A friend of mine does photos for a Pink Floyd cover band and he only has the 17-55IS. I think he's done two shows for them, both on stage and off stage. You can see some samples here:

(Look for photos from Juan Martinez)

The EXIF data is in tact so you can see what settings were used.

Hello
Its a tough call to decide what lens would you choose

Certain factors depend on shooting such event.

1.Light availability whether is this even during evening (before sunset) or after dark (assuming it as an outdoor event)

2.How close can you get to musicians.

If i were you ..I would use a 70-200 2.8 IS(if canon)
it works good on low light and if you cannot get close ..u got the zoom range....

I doubt about the 50mm not sure bat 10-22 and 17-85 yea 55 -200 is a good choice ...if you have enough light

Hope it helps
cheers

I'd probably bring the 10-22 and the 50/1.8

three songs isn't a lot of time so changing lenses might be a hassle and may cause you to miss a few good moments, but if you aren't too worried about that and you don't mind carrying more, then I would also suggest the 70-200 2.8 (even better with IS) rental...

reason being you could probably leave your spot after the three songs, find yourself a "perch" and continue taking shots with it haha

Thanks all. It is at night, but I suspect there might be decent lighting (they're the headliner). I'd like a good variety of shots and assume I will have time to make one lens change.

Like Bernard said, 70-200 F2.8 with IS should cut the butter as they say. I'm thinking 10-22 tho might be Too wide, But I unno exactly how far/close your gonna be.

It really depends on the distance you are from the performers... if you are 10' away or less -- a 50mm might be nice, but if you have some distance -- 70-200 range for sure!

Do you have a second body?

I don't have a second body. I think I'll be less than 10 feet away (right in front of the stage where the security is) in the area between the stage and the crowd.

I think the 50mm might work. Guess I will have to wing it.

Have a few lens options available - and be prepared to do a lens change on the fly. That's the only advice I can give you. Otherwise -- rent a 24-70 f/2.8 which will solve all of your problems!

LOL. others have asked the key questions. why not just bring all your lens like on a lens belt or something :D that's what i've done and i've done fine. it all depends on the type of shots you'll want to get, but if you can get something in the 24-70mm range, like another member's said, that would solve a lot of your problems and be a good default (but not perfect) lens for this occasion. GL.

I ended up using the 17-85mm and wish I brought the 55-250mm. The set-up wasn't ideal, as the shooting area was about 8ft below the stage and the pit was full of photographers. I was lucky enough to get some 'practice' during Metric and Iron+Wine's set, so tried to adjust for the headliner.
