Hello
I am planning to shoot one of my friends wedding
There is already a primary photographer covering the event ...
I am shooting purely for fun and experience.

I have 5D mark 1 and 50mm 1.4 and if i have to choose one lens ...what lens should i choose....
I am thinking of renting from vistek...

Right now i am thinking of renting 70-200 2.8 IS which is 40$ for a weekend
Since i don't make any money out of this ....
I don't want to spend more money ..

Please correct me if its a bad choice for this lens ..if yes what other lens should I choose...

Thanks for reading and any input is greatly appreciated
cheers
yeshwanth

70-200 will be great outdoors but you'll be limited when in doors unless if you have a lot of room to move around with unobstructed view of your subject.

I believe 24-70 is a popular choice.

I personally think the 70-200 2.8 IS is a good choice to catch candid moments which is probably what you will be doing as a second shooter. The 50 1.4 will come in handy for low light. One thing I would suggest is to decide the the maximum iso setting you are comfortable with with the 5D mk1 so that there are no surprises. 1600 iso should be fine but you may be pushing it at 3200 iso.

Hello
Thank you, for the quick replies
@Xerox
Since i am renting the lens anyway ..i am going to make the best use of the lens its going to be my two day .....multipurpose lens to make the best use of the 40$ :P lol...cal me cheap..:P :)

@podo
Since i already have 50 1.4
I am going to rent only one lens, Which could be a 70-200 or the 24-70 2.8

@James
I never so far pushed my iso more than 800 .....so far ..since i neve needed but i have a sb600 which iam thinking of carying and accessing it wireless or may be on top of the camera ..so I doubt if i go 1600 or 3200 ...
Since i dont have much experience in these shoots.....
I am just making imaginative decisions up there....so please correct me anytime .....

Thank you ..

I would regularly push my 20D to 1600 iso without problems. With my 50D I will push it to 3200 or 6400. So the 5D mk1 shouldn't have any problems but try it out at home, in low light, and chimp to 100% to see if you like what you see.

You are going to use an sb600 (Nikon) on a 5D?
Good lens suggestions above. Since you are also guest go with the 70-200 IS and have fun 'sniping' some good candid moments. Also you may very well know most of the guests and what to look for. Makes for some good personal captures the couple will like.
btw: I think you meant to say 430EX II :)

I will do the experiments and see James...

Rufusm...
yea i have a sb600 Since i moved from nikon...so i still holding on to that flash ..and use it wireless... didnt feel like getting rid of it...
it serves the purpose for me....

Mainly i am going to shoot the wedding couple...( i will imagine myself that... i am the main photographer and cover the event lol...and shoot candids too)

My idea is ..get some experience in hand and have some good shots of the couple and the whole event..kind...

Thanks for checking ...

Got ya! Your wording threw me 'accessing it wireless or may be on top of the camera'
Above all have fun and enjoy the wedding!

24-70 would be far more useful indoors than a 70-200. Give more options on the wide end and if you plan on being a like 20 yards away from the action then consider the 70-200.

if you want one lens and one only 24-70 allows for group shots and longer shots. The 2.8 is nice too.

24-70 or 28-70 definately covers the most popular ranges for general wedding shots. A 70-200 for far away candids, and 14-24 to get some funky close shots -- but watch the edge for distortion!

since you're just shooting for fun and experience, get the 70-200 and do the "paid" photographer a favor and stay out of his way... me thinx the B&G would hate for their $2000+ photog to put down his gear because someone is continually tailing him or getting in his way....or if they get a shyt load of pictures with you in them :)

in my case, 70-200 2.8 is used a lot as is the 24-70 (FX)/17-55 (DX)
usage is prob damn near equal between them, which is why i also carry 3 bodies with me

No i am renting ...24-70 alone....it is billed as a purchase...i dont know why ....

"Also, there is a security deposit required for this rental of $750.00, this goes onto a credit card (Visa, mastercard, or American Express). The person who picks up the equipment must have their own card, for the deposit. The deposit is put down as a purchase and is refunded to the card upon the return of the equipment. "

this is for the 70-200 since i am going wid the other one ..i will be paying 500

Since you mentioned that you are planning on staying out of the way, you should be careful with using your flash as well - especially wireless use - it could interfere with the main photog's wireless

I would advise that you do what you can, without using any flash at all

Have fun - I love renting lenses - just hate returning them.....

I find the 70-200 is pretty long unless you want the "isolated" shots down country roads etc. The 24-70 is the most common and I also take a 105 portrait lens for close in shots ... with the wideangle, you have to watch the distortion a bit, but you get some fun images sometimes....

i know this thread's a little old (man, stuff in here moves slowly), but if you're a second photographer just shooting for fun indoors and outdoors, the 70-200 2.8 IS fits the bill. like others have said, with the 24-70mm, you'd be in the way.

i went through this exact same situation a few weeks ago for my sister's wedding. i just wanted to get some experience and since i heard so many positive reviews about the 70-200 i rented it for the weekend.

the only time i used it was when my parents were taking my sister down the isle and after that i had my 35mm back on for most of the night. i felt very restricted with the focal length. i felt a lot more comfortable standing a bit closer and was still able to stay out of the photographer's way (he was actually right in the action)

indoors it was pretty much useless. if i stood far away enough to be discreet, someone would always be in the way. i had it with me most of the day and just never felt i really needed it. my vote would be for the 24-70.

personally i like to take pictures with a bit more of the surrounding in it and i feel the 70-200 is really only good at isolating individuals or very small groups. so it all depends on what kind of shots you are going for

Time pass by ..very fast i guess...

I rented 24-70 for the first time and for the second time ..I shot a my friends reception...........

But this time...There was no primary photographer ....or secondary photographer. I was the only PRO photograher...lol ......It was a fun event and I was the only guy wid SLR ...So i decided to rent a 70-200 2.8 IS and .....Did some candids....

And it was very nice ......Except the situation where i had to do a group shot of lot of people together........Thats when i had to use my 50mm 1.4 ( which is the only other lens i had) ...To shoot a picture of the group....
Luckily it came out okay...

To shoot candid and closeups ...no other lens is better than 70-200 fir candids and closeups,For wide or group purpose 24-70 will do a great job...Unless you want the primes...

Thank you all for the input .....

Cheers
yesh

yeah, if you find you're the only photographer around and all you have is the 50mm and the 70-200mm, you're in for it. with the 70-200mm, you'll have to stand pretty far back for a group shot. if you don't find yourself getting in the way, the 24-70mm range is pretty versatile. you can check out a sigma 24-70mm... that's a great bang for the buck option in that range. Hey adding to this thread.

Would you guys recommend the sigma or the tamron 70-200 2.8?

or would you swear by the canon/nikkor 70-200 2.8 with IS or something?

i'm looking to pick up a 70-200 2.8 but i think the IS lenses are a little out of budget. I am also doing some wedding photography or want to try, so i figured you guys must know.

If you're a Canon user I would stick with any of their 70-200 lenses since they are all superb. I would honestly ask yourself if you need IS for the type of shooting you would be doing. Plus the IS versions, especially the 2.8 is bigger/heavier which is a factor as well.

if you're on a budget, then just go with the sigma version as it's a great bang for the buck option. if you're going to spring for the canon, then i'd go with the f4 IS or 2.8 IS versions if you can. i wouldn't even waste my time or money on the non-IS versions, though the f4 non-IS is pretty budget priced for what you get. i would probably get sigma's version before getting a non IS canon 70-200mm lens as the 2.8 capability will really kick in in low light settings. however, if you do mostly outside shooting, you will absolutely LOVE the f4 IS. the 2.8 IS ain't bad either but it sure is heavy. =P.
