I got one 5 years ago at the Henry's Outlet Centre, although I don't like the term "Spy lens"...it's a 90 degree angle lens!

One story I can tell you is about the parents of a boy who was a schizophrenic...absolutely didn't want his picture taken. In their case they happened to have a video taken of their son a few months before he committed suicide...the video portion of the video where he faced the camera was less than a second (which I digitized a frame of video for printing), but if they had one of these they could have taken many pictures without the boy knowing.

Of course you have to watch out what you are pointing the end of the lens at even though you are photographing through the side of it.

For instance, if you are pointing the side at a bird you want to photograph, but the front (fake) element is pointing at a sexy woman and her jealous husband, watch out!!!

I should also add that police use these for seeing around corners of buildings!

or perhaps "A boy who had schizophrenia" - the more PC way to say it.

That spy lens is just wrong. It's for pervs on the beach IMO. If you are going to take candid pics then you shouldn't hide behind one of these lenses.

Not dissimilar from people who use 200mm telephoto lenses to take candid pics.

I'd opt for a 500mm for beach shooting... better subject separation.

Wasn't the Yashica T4 designed for through-the-buttonholes-of-your-coat shooting on a subway?

I thought it was made for shooting buxom gals on the Riviera.

Mine must be broken though...

Really? It's not getting hot women to let you ejaculate on their breasts?

This is more of a counter-espionage camera but still good for a laugh. I have one.

Image

... not that I could take it out anywhere in these post-911 days but it's still really fun to play around with.

Comes in a cool metal case, too.

Image

I believe the lomo guys are hawking them now as the latest hipster-russo camera.

http://shop.lomography.com/zenit/fotosniper/

They're selling them for $275... They can be found for much less on ebay.

I bet anyone who uses this on the street is going to get busted soon enough, since people would think it's a weapon and call cops :D

That's something I worry about any time that I'm around the airport, with my tripod mounted Bigma.

I do use a camera brace sometimes which rests on my chest, but never had an issue (then again I don't use it in those places where I might get into trouble):
