Hello folks. I am fairly new to this forum..
I am currently a student in Photography so my budget won't allow me to get a zoom lens..
I looked into the portrait lens, because I do a lot of portraiture in the school.
I have a D800, fortunate enough to have one, and I am deciding on either 50mm 1.4G or the 85mm 1.8G for the portrait.
I currently have 50mm 1.8D, but the image seems soft on the D800, even on the tripod :? ...
What do you guys think would be best for me currently, if I am using it mostly in the studio?
If I missed any info, let me know! and please help me decide! Thank you!!

definately the 85mm since it is a perfect portrait length and you already have a 50mm.

I have the 85mm f/1.8G and D800 -- excellent lens on the D800!

50mm 1.4G is a bit soft (as with most of this speed) and you should only buy it if you need the speed.
50mm 1.8G is okay - definitely better bokeh than 50mm 1.8D
Sigma 50mm 1.4 HSM is a tad bit better in terms of rendering than the 1.4G, but it vignettes and has chromabs.

85mm 1.4G is expensive. Surprise!

85mm 1.8G is actually the best performing 85mm Nikon lens according to DxO Mark.
