Hello All,

I went to Henry's to get a filter for my lens, the guy at the counter replied that Nikon D3000 camera doesn't need any UV filter as it already has a filter for that in the camera. Instead he recommended protective filter (clear filter) just to avoid anything happen to the lens glass.
Is this true? Does this mean I will never need any UV filter?

Thanks for any input you may have :)

Martin

Uhhh a UV filter in camera? What now? Lenses need filters. Never heard of a camera filter before.

UV filters are a preference thing. Some swear by it (as it's extra protection) but others not so much (saying it decreases sharpness). Some (older ie Nikon Ai-S) lenses actually suffer from flares by having a UV filter. Up to you.

Don't waste your time with a clear filter though. A good HOYA HMC UV filter will do the trick. Or if you have a bigger budget, B+W is the other good brand. What lens is this for? If it's just a kit lens or consumer lens, just go for a cheaper UV filter since it's nothing to brag about from the start. An expensive filter on a cheap lens does nothing for you.

I think the Henry's representative is talking about how the digital sensor is not sensitive to UV as film is. UV can cause haze effect on film which can degrade your image. I don't think UV is an issue with digital.

I think this is why once DSLR hit the market you start seeing more and more "protective" or "clear" filters while during the film days most ppl used UV filters for both protection and to prevent that haze.

And if you want filters, you can get higher quality filters at way better prices at http://maxsaver.net/ (formerly hvstar).

Except for when NDs or polarizers apply lenses don't need filters. Nor do cameras. Save your money.
