Hello,

I am thinking to get a UWA lens (for Canon 50D), any recommendation?
Tokina 12mm-24mm f/4?
Sigma 8-16mm F4.5-5.6 DC HSM?

Thanks!

A friend of mine used to use the Tokina 11-16 F/2.8 and really enjoyed it.

i really love my 10-22 canon. I bought it from amazon.com and had it shipped within the states for pickup.

I would go for the Tokina 11-16 f2.8. Fast f2.8 vs mega slow Sigma. Also the rectilinear projection distortion is going to be pretty severe in the Sigma near the 8mm end. I'm saving my pennies for the Tokina.

Learning to use an ultrawide is a challenge and will require real work, about 90% of what I've seen shot with UWA's is junk with tipping over buildings and lack of primary subject. Mega wide is not always the best option.

+1 for 11-16.

After going through the motions of picking out an ultra wide, all the feedback on the 11-16 was extremely favourable. I finally got it about 2 weeks ago and while I have done any extensive shooting with it yet, I very much like it. Just waiting for a TPMG event i can actually make it out to now!

(mine's Nikon btw, so I don't know about the Canon version)

Due to the 1.6x crop of Canon vs the 1.5 crop of almost everyone else except four thirds, your angle of view will be slightly narrower on Canon than other brands, assuming the same lens. The difference between 10mm and 11mm may not sound like much, but may be noticeable. My main ultrawide is a 16-35 (on full frame), so the advantage of getting a 10mm is that you will have the same angle of view.

That being said, I own the Sigma 12-24 also, but to be honest it's not the easiest lens to use because 12 on FF is so wide. The Sigma 8-16 is the crop body version of this lens, so this will also apply.

Agree about the 12-24. The worst is when you're shooting in tourist areas and some creeper creeps into the corner of your shot @ 12mm and their face gets all distorted :x It's also a relatively slow lens.

If you don't see yourself upgrading to FF any time soon, I think the Tokina 11-16 is probably one of the better choices because of how fast it is.

Thanks for all the advice!
Nope, not planning to go FF any time soon. I was thinking since will most likely using outdoor anyway (ie. landscape), do I need a fast lens in that case ? or is always nice to have a fast lens anyway.

For the price and optical difference, the Tokina comes out on top over the other 3rd party lenses. That's why most of us are suggesting it.

I love my Tokina 11-16 too, especially you're shooting indoors. But did anyone have problem with the focusing? Mine was off a little bit, and have to send back to fix.
