Hey,
I've checked out Headshots, Vistek and Filmplus lens rentals and they all have the same condition - I would be responsible for providing insurance for the gear. I can't really do this, so is there anywhere in Toronto where you can rent lenses and just pay extra for insurance? (Similar to renting a car)

Thanks!

You have to rent by mail, but this may help:

Quote:
What does insurance cover?

Our damage insurance covers repair of a lens should it be damaged while in your possession. If this happens, you will be responsible only for paying only a deductible (5% of the lens' sales price). Without damage insurance you are responsible for the cost of repairing or replacing a damaged lens.

Please note water damage is considered negligence by the insurer and is not covered as damage. If you plan on using the lens near water or in the pouring rain, please realize you are NOT covered by the damage insurance.

Does insurance cover theft and/or loss?

No, we have to be able to identify the product you rented as ours. If a lens is stolen or lost, the full value of the lens is your responsibility.

I have rent fairly regularly from Vistek and you only need insurance if the item is over a 10 or 15k (not sure the exact number). I have rented large lighting kits without insurance... as long as you have enough space on your credit card for the deposit. The deposit is usually about half of the sticker price. For example a ID MKIV would require a deposit of about $2500.

Note: Without insurance you are solely responsible for theft or damage. Check before you leave the store to make sure its in working condition.

I would like to touch on a few points discussed in this thread to help clarify how rentals at Vistek work.

Every piece of equipment that is rented requires a security deposit. The amount charged for security deposits vary based on the price of the rental equipment, please ask your representative for the desposit cost at the time of booking to avoid any surprises. Security deposits minus the rental cost are refunded when equipment is returned.

Most rentals do not require proof of insurance, if you are unsure please ask a rental representative at the time of booking.

It is important to note without insurance the renter is fully, solely responsible for any loss, damage or theft incurred while rental equipment is in their possession.

Our full rental policy is available here. http://www.vistek.ca/rentals/policies.aspx

Lensrentalcanada as far as I know does not require a deposit.
Just the rental or rental+ insurance. Only time you need a deposit is if you are not a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.

I personally find this deposit business bullocks. That's what insurance is for!

I rather pay 5% after I damage the lens rather than let the renter hold half the value of the item while paying rent on it!
