Umbrella, stand and flash. Get some reflectors while you're at it. Oh, and try to get a person that listens to your directions while holding the reflector.

For very basic and cost efficient you can get a single speedlight (or Vivitar 285HV if on a tight budget for example), an umbrella and light stand and then fill in with a reflector. If you want to get a little more advance, a couple speedlights and umbrellas on light stands and radio triggers. If you want to move up, you can get a couple mono lights and softboxes to start with and keep adding more lights as your budget increases.

Depending on the kind of look you want for your product shots, you might want to go the softbox route. Mind you, you can also do light painting on your products with a flashlight. If you go the softbox route, try and find one that supports modifiers like grids.

You could first build a light tent out of cardboard and sheets + 2/3 desklamps with temperature balanced bulbs, so you get no colour shifts, check strobist.com or other DIY blogs

Finding someone that can hold it "well" is the toughest part

well thanks everyone for the awesome(and quick!) responses. I am probably just going to do some sort of make shift set up for now and then go with my Metz 54 MZ-3 on a tripod with an umbrella once i get some tinkering time and a bit more cash.

ALSO anyone know of anyone selling any Metz equipment for Nikon(or any other really) let me know as i may want to pick up an extra speedlight or some sync cords, SCA adapters, etc.

Thanks again!
Scott.

But you will end up doing all the work instead of directing and shooting. Walking back and forth a few meters for each shot adds up fast!

:D

The very best answer to that would be to take any lighting class With John Jones.
