Budget photography

I know lot of people are getting into photography and want to know how to get started. First I will make it clear this is how I started it does not mean it's right for everyone.

First gear I had Canon SL1 NEW
Some generic batteries
Kit Lens
1.4 50MM Prime USED
Cheap $20 tripod
about $850
That was it.

If anyone is thinking about starting the best book I can recommend is understanding Exposure. This was my bible when I started.

I mostly did family portraits of relatives and was lucky to do some nice Tfp shoots.

When I wanted to progress bought a yongnuo 568 ex II flash. What looks massive on a SL1 might I add. Pick this up on Craigslist for $60.

I used optical slave function and the pop flash for off camera triggering.

I found this setup did me well. I would also like to hear from others how they started on other systems like nikon, Sony, etc.

Thanks for the suggestion, do you know of any other helpful resources for beginners?

The best book I ever read was called understanding exposure and I think it's a must read for beginners. It simple to read and explains a lot about settings.
