I like all of them, do you happen to crop a lot of your pictures? The blue jay's bokehish background looks kinda grainy..

Thanks. This gives you the idea how much cropping was done.

They are all grainy and taken at iso 1600 with no exception. The reason being that I always set my camera for in flight shots only (with fast shutter speed at least 1/1000s). Also I need slightly deeper DoF for the long 300mm.
Another alternative is to take beamer flash for stationary shots which is not something I would like to do.\
Anyway flash will never work for in flight shots

Great action shots Daniel, esp the ones with them catching the fish. Well done. Did you run these through NoiseNinja or similar?

Nice shots. Do you use ballhead or gimbal for in-flight shots? I have tried both hand-held as well as ball head, didn't have much success. Just ordered a Jobu Jr from Vistek. Where do you go to shoot birds, especially this time of the year?

Uncropped? You must be pretty close indeed.

Most Pileated WP's will allow reasonably close approach. It was more a question of how high the tree was, and not going for too steep of an angle.

Thanks. No. I am not good in it at all. I tried that making it even worse.

They were all handheld as my lens is 300mm. A sturdy tripod is needed for 400 or 500mm I believe.
Seagulls are everywhere and they are good practice subject. I shot most of the others in around Lynde Shore area in Ajax. The other area pretty good is Humber Marshes by High Park.

Here is one I shot a couple weeks ago in Ottawa. The high iso was a mistake... I shot a hockey game the night prior and forgot to flip it.

In Riverwood the other day:

In Rattray Marsh a while ago:

Don't mean to hijack the thread, couldn't determine if it as a personal / post your bird thread. If personal I can move these out!

1/4000s & F8 is about right. The trade off of lower iso is smaller DoF. You get a creamy bokeh

This is not a personal thread and you may notice there has been very few wildlife images posted here indeed. I guess a lot of tpmgers reside in downtown (or their center of activities are in downtown)

Andrew Hayden Park. Did you catch the Brant?

This is the Brant... it's not a Canada Goose :)

I cannot say I share the same passion that you have for taking bird shots Daniel. I love nature... but landscape is more my thing.

The photo opp of southern US is n times better than Ontario as shown. Now for a period we may be able to get images of migrating birds briefly until next spring. :( :(

Do you have a favorite spot in or around Toronto? We could organize an event.

I like to shot on the Leslie Spit when I don't have the time to go outside Toronto.

Humber Marshes by High Park which is within TTC area..

Do not expect a lot of subjects. I usu treat that as an outdoor activity. And 1/2 of the time I came back empty-handed. Keepers are even fewer and that will be bonus.
I do not know about David who is more into landscape. Or a lot of tpmgers are into portrait or glamor shots. Likely they have more to post as their subjects are a lot friendier.
Somehow I have found out that majority of my shots consist of birdie butts or part of their tails.
Swearing at them does not help

For waterfowl, shooting can get easier in the winter. Humber Bay East and Col Sam Smith Park are two good spots. The boat launch at Bluffer's Park in Scarborough is also very good in winter.

After a big freeze-up, the Burlington shipping channel under the Lift Bridge is fantastic. It's the only spot I know where you can get 10,000 ducks flying by _per_hour_.

The biggest concern is icy, slippery rocks and docks, and freezing your butt off :)

I just saw a great grey? heron at the wet lands below Riverdale farm but you need a 400mm to get a decent shot.
