Found the other IR topic too restrictive (r72, hand held etc)

Post any IR pics, including converted, non-converted, "false IR", faux color, b&w, hand held, tripod mounted etc...

Sue, try increasing the exposure by another 1 to 1.5 stops to get a bit more punch.

I usually set a custom white balance (CWB) before I take the shots, i.e., take a shot of grass or tree on bright sunlight and use that pic to set the CWB (Canon, I am sure Nikon will have similar function). With that you will get a shot close to something like this:

Image

You notice that the grass looks almost white.

If not, you can try setting the white balance in Aperture/Light Room clicking the eye dropper on some grass or tree in the shot.

For the blue sky, you do a channel swap of Red and Blue in Channel Mixer in PS, i.e. in the red channel make red -> 0% and blue -> 100% and in blue channel make red -> 100% and blue to 0%. You can try other combination in the channel mixer for different color casts.

Also most of the shots will need a bit of contrast boost, I typically use tweaked "S" curve and a bit of sharpening.

Anyone doing infrared with Canon XSI? I seem to have issues with my xsi. It spits out TOO much red.

The XTI works better, although I have trouble getting nice false colour out of the image.

Great explanation. Thanks so much. I'll try to see if I can get mine to look a bit more like IR shot.

My XTi IR shots look like red blood and I have to guess my composition because I can't see a thing through the viewfinder and I can't practice because I'm borrowing somebody else' filter. Oh crap~~~

I use XSi, however it has been converted to IR by LifePixel. By default, the IR shots will be red, unless you set the custom white balance.

The degree of color depends on the IR filter type. The standard IR 720nm does not allow much color though. I use that and use the channel mixer to swap red/blue channel. If you need more color, then you need filter with 600nm - 650nm, which allows more visible light.

You can find some details and sample shots.

I see the colours on the view finder. But photoshop will not take the custom white balance. I can bring it into gimp, and I see false-colours... I just haven't figured out how to make the colours look good. I like the blue sky+white leaves, but my colours are too blue, with green leaves.

But maybe I need to try a new filter.
