Theme Rules

Don't flood any particular theme with all your photos, try and limit yourself in each theme so that it's not dominated by any one poster. This allows others to get an opportunity to include their photos.

Don't create a new theme without searching first.

This is not the place to critique photos - if you want to critique photos or have your photos critiqued please post it in the Critique Corner

Do not post pornography. Anything that contains nudity or is sexual in nature add NSFW tags.

How to Post an Image:

To share a flickr image click the share button above the image on the flickr page, select "Grab the HTML/BBCode," choose a medium size and select BBCode from the radio button then copy and paste the resulting code into your post. That code should look something like this:

Code:
[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/christopherbrian/7249723348/][img]http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7240/7249723348_b4f71dc8a9.jpg[/img][/url]
[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/christopherbrian/7249723348/]Red Winged Blackbird at Presqu'ile Provincial Park[/url] by [url=http://www.flickr.com/people/christopherbrian/]Christopher Brian's Photography[/url], on Flickr

To post images that are a static link/url, a link/url that looks like this: http://home.cogeco.ca/~ionsvw/images/3monkeys.jpg surround the url with BBCode image tags so it looks like this:

Code:
[img]http://home.cogeco.ca/~ionsvw/images/3monkeys.jpg[/img]

That will produce this

Image

except with your picture.

Thanks

I would suggest to create a SYS (share your shot) section for this matter

We've discussed that actually and we're still undecided on that for now.

I just think Themes is a little misleading, and you and I we both know not everyone reads rules right away. Maybe calling it as Share your photo/shot would make more sense, what do you think?

The intention of this is to share pics that follows a specific theme started by somebody here. Its not meant for one to share random photos from your site or what not.

Themes is ok, once people click on it, they will realize what is really going on inside this section.

Great idea for a different section. :)

make sure they are all at least 3000 x 2500 pixels - because loading that kind of thread is fun

I am glad you guys like my idea ... It was time to seperate the themed photo series from the general forum. The limit of 3 images per week is only a guideline... if you really really have to post one or two extra images.... I am sure we are not going to remove it. But we would probably say something if you posted 8-20 images in one day from your vacation to Mexico (for example).

Thanks for separating these threads out of the general photography section.

Tanner wrote:

Does that mean that an admin would need to create a new thread for a new theme?
I'd personally like to see a 'night' and/or 'music' themed thread in this section.

Or can I just start one?

Thanks again.

I would suggest to create a sticky topic to summarize the most popular themes.

Share your photos sounds better to me too, but it's just a name. Most people here know what is going on.

I don't post any photos in these threads because, well frankly my skills aren't on par with people here. I am a beginner.
But these are the only threads I usually visit. I come here to view great photos that Torontonians have taken. They give me pleasure, they inspire me. They show me what I can become if ever I apply myself. I wish I spent more time praising the great shots I see here. One criticism I have is that few people comment on other peoples' work. Is it ego? But I digress.

I can understand why the moderators want to split these from the general questions. People were participating more in these photo sharing threads. General photography threads were getting lost. But it seems people here want to share photos. And people like me prefer to follow these threads.

So why would there be a limit to the number of posts per week? That would seem to be a useful strategy if these theme threads were still in the General threads. But now that they are separated I think there's no need to limit posts. I don't see anyone dumping photos on these boards. The photos are of high quality.

I'd hope the mods would try to encourage MORE sharing of photos and encourage MORE discussion about everyone's work. Instead it appears to me that this seems to discourage posting. I'd like to see more wonderful photos, not less.

Am I silly to have this mindset? How would LESS photos be better?

There has been times I have seen numerous posts with a single image or a single response with half a dozen images. The goal is to have everybody share their photos, and not to end up with a thread where it's dominated by one or two members - I know that this isn't the intention.

If one is interested in seeing more of their photos, the individual posting the images should make sure that the link to their website, flickr, or what not is filled in such that folks who want to see more can go to their flickr stream for example.

If you look at the description of the theme section it does say something along the lines of that since the theme section was implemented...

"Place to share images under a particular theme."

I don't know how much more simpler I can get.

As for a sticky to summarize the popular themes - sorry I'm not willing to do this unless somebody wants to do this. I also see no need for this - you can look at the response count/# of views of a thread to gauge the populartiy anyways. Active ones will show up near the top in the list anyways.

Search for a theme - if it doesn't exist, feel free to start one.

That's unavoidable. Not everyone takes abstract shots, feet photos, Ontario historic site photos or pictures of garbage. Not everyone owns a holga camera. So these threads will be 'dominated' by the few people who take these shots irrespective of the number of shots one can post.
I love viewing the holga shots but limiting the number of posts per week won't change the fact these threads are dominated by the few people who participate in them. It will just decrease the number of excellent shots on the board.

Tanner, I really don't enjoy flickr. Navigating inside that site is a pain. You forever have to click just to see a shot at a decent size and you need to view EVERYTHING. Here people post their best. That's why I come here - so I don't have to go to flickr.

But it's your forum. I just thought I'd point out that I think these measures will decrease the enjoyment and participation of people who like to view the great works of TPMG'ers. Hopefully I am wrong.

If people want to share their photos, they can go ahead and share them anytime but if they don't want to share, that's fine too. But if I start a thread with a theme then I'm likely to keep on posting and when no one else wants to share then it's going to be dominated by me and this is beyond my control...

It's not my forum, I just do most of the admin work and step in when needed LOL. TPMG belongs to this community, you guys chip in at meets to help cover the costs for running this site.

So if the folks here really want to have the ability to post more than three images a week, then let us know here.

The purpose of the sticky is to help people to find the popular topics quickly without searching among hundreds of existing. But it is only my suggestion. If you don't see it necessary, it's fine.

I recall an old joke: A client asked the fish shop owner to take down the "Fish" shield outside the shop with an argument: "The smell is telling for itself" :D

Just kidding, don't mean to pick on you :D

Yes, "Themes" is fine too. And the smell is telling for itself ;-)

Fionah, you can take abstract shots, feet shots, and garbage shots if you come photoshooting with me :P now I'm thinking of going over to the island tomorrow and I can do all these shots with you if you come and join me.

As for the Holga camera, it's cheap and very easy to operate and Urban Outfitters downtown carries them all the time so if you get one, I can give you a couple rolls of 120 film to start right away and then you can start flooding the Holga thread just like me.

I think separating the photo sharing threads from the photography related threads is a great idea. Nice change. This fills the need to separate the 2.

I believe fionah raises several good points. I particularly enjoy the Holga thread but would hate to see less of them. The photos are hosted externally, so that isn't an issue. I see no problem if one or 2 persons 'dominate' a given thread given the nature of some of these themes. Most people don't shoot holga, garbage, historic mills or abstract shots. These threads will probably be dominated by the few fine people that shoot these photos regardless of the limits. But I still enjoy viewing them.
I think many people here feel 3 images a week is too restrictive. A casual perusal of the threads will indicate people easily exceed that limit in a day or even in a single post. Perhaps people should also pipe in here if in favour of restricting the number of posts. Is there really a desire for this? Is there really a need? As a frequent poster in this and other forums I'd like to know if people are offended, put off, bothered by my posting more than 3 images a week.
