hummingbird in the Monteverde Cloud Reserve, Costa Rica. Had to use all of my stealth skills to sneak up to this guy. :P Taken hand held with a relatively slow (but light) 70-200 f4.0 in low light situation, severery cropped. Flash used.

I think this beautiful bird is a heron. He winters on the Sierpe River in Costa Rica:

By Jove, I think you've got it!!

But I guess I better re-process the RAW. I must have the WB wrong if you can't see the yellow. That does explain the lack of a 'blue heron'. It didn't look like a green heron.

What a pity that you must have done major cropping. Impressive timing indeed

Flight shots of small and ultrafast birds is tricky to take. But they are fascinating

I like the details that I can get with my lighter f4.0 70-200. I imagine it doesn't focus as quickly as the f2.8 lens. That makes it difficult to get moving birds like this one.

200mm is short for a birdie lens. But you did well. And you must be close then.

At one time I was really close to a huron which put on a show

It is so close that I was using a 200mm lens and with the image uncropped

It took me a good 30 minutes to get a decent shot of that little guy.
Mainly because of distance of my lens as you said and they don't tend to stand still for very long.

That's the beauty of digital - you can fire off several shots and save the one that was in focus and sharp (when the critter didn't move much)

This was one of the few keepers of a small jittery guy I shot in a lowlight cloud forest canopy with the slow f4.0 70-200mm

My Barred Owl, woodpecker and hawk photos are from Presqu'Isle and the Kestrel and duck photos were from Colonel Samuel Smith Park.

Thanks for looking!
