Ok, I'll jump in on the bandwagon of the recent flurry of "post your" threads. I like to shoot historic sites as a lot of you know. I have been working on a project for the past 2 year's which I have titled "MILLWORKS". So I am going to start off with some historic mill images, but feel free to post anything that has to do with history / pioneer life, etc. Interior/Exterior or detail images.

My first image is from the Backhouse Mill at Backus Village, which we visited recently. This is a view of the loading area where flour was weighed on a cart which could be pushed onto a large scale. On the right hand side, you can see one of the many steel roller mills still. This mill has an excellent collection of artifacts.

Image

The second image below is the Balaclava Sawmill located up in Renfrew county near Eganville. The mill is located in the ghost town of Balaclava. At one time this was a bustling little community. The mill was an integral part of the community. This image will be featured in the upcoming fall newsletter for SPOOM (Society for the preservation of old mills). I also have this image on a post card which I have been handing out at art sales.

Image

My next image is the Welbeck Sawmill located just north west from the town of Durham (not the region) off of highway 6. This shingle mill has been operated now for 5 generations of the Welbeck family. I visited the mill back in January, and recently this past weekend. A lovely place to stop by if you are ever near there.

Image

That's it for now... lets see some of yours?

Hohensalzburg Fortress, Salzburg, Austria
The mightiest fortress of central Europe. First stones laid in 1077. Just a little perspective on perception of old  too bad I didn't have a camera when I was at Giza in Egypt

Yeah
They are certainly historic. These must be over 2000 yrs. But the door is probably 300 yrs only (from Jerulsalem )

Uh, I believe there is a Delhi in Ontario.
Here's the famous Jama Masjid (mosque) of Delhi.

And Paris, Ontario is beautiful as well.
Many of Paris' great generals have marched through this historic arch

..and of course Ottawa, Ontario is famous for it's pork barreling, patronage and graft

Ta Prohm is the modern name of a temple at Angkor, Cambodia, built in the Bayon style largely in the late 12th and early 13th centuries and originally called Rajavihara.
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/cephalosporin/3698198525/" title="Ta Prohm ~ City of the Gods - Angkor, Cambodia by YYZDez, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2656/3698198525_2deb164467_o.jpg" width="800" height="533" alt="Ta Prohm ~ City of the Gods - Angkor, Cambodia"></a>

Temples of Bagan, Myanmar.
The majority of its buildings were built in the 1000s to 1200s, during the time Bagan was the capital of the First Burmese Empire.

Here's the not old stuff, 1473, built by the Venetians Nafplio, Greece.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/dimitris/163956132/" title="castle on water by Dimitris and Nancy, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/51/163956132_f967a8169c.jpg" width="500" height="333" alt="castle on water"></a>

And here's something a little older but it's pretty much always under construction. They first started around 430BC or so.

sorry, I think I had indicated that I was more interested in local history than photos from abroad. don't get me wrong .. I like seeing that stuff too.. but I am really fascinated by stuff that I can drive to within our great province of Ontario.

So no more photos from other continents. thanks.

OK, lets get the ball rolling on this topic again!

I'll start with an image from Speedslee Mill, which is in Blackbridge near Cambridge.

Wow coming from Europe it really is interesting what passes for historic here in Canada. Basically anything that was neglected. Precious little is deemed worth saving. Progress marches on here. Not saying it is a bad thing, just different. Change happens faster here as a result. Just that some things are lost.

We shouldn't forget the few historic sites right here in Toronto.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/metrix_feet/398840014/" title="Elgin Theatre Old Elegance by Metrix X, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/151/398840014_0c1d30c975_o.jpg" width="1200" height="643" alt="Elgin Theatre Old Elegance"></a>

[quote][i]Welcome to the Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre!

The Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre is one of the most beautiful theatre complexes in the world. And it is the last operating double-decker theatre in the world

Good point, are these sites historic or rundown? Can any old rundown place be considered historic?

The Norisle used to transport passengers from Tobermory to Manitoulin Island... It rests in a small harbour next to the Manitoulin Roller Mills.

My contribution - Georgian Bay, Hope island lighthouse.
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bright_side/1604994893/" title="DSCN0033.jpg by bright_side, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2137/1604994893_c047350fdf.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="DSCN0033.jpg"></a>
This site is of great significance to the area as it is the last of these stations to retain all of its original buildings (1884 lighthouse, 1904 Fog Plant, 2 separate keepers houses, generator shed, 1884 boat house and of course the original 2-seater outhouse).
Hope Island light was also one of the first in the region to house a ship to shore radio system that provided regular weather reports and shipping information (radio room still in original 1940's condition) This was also one of the first light stations in Canada to have a female lightkeeper.

My friend and I run this site : www.ntropy.us

...which is a website where we write a little about the industrial and institutional places we visit, which are sometimes closed or abandoned. We have about 5o sites you can read about, some even with historical images.

Some samples.
