Details:

What: Meteor shower and star trails
When: Saturday August 11th 2012
Time: 3 PM until 2AM
Where: Torrance Barrens Dark Sky Reserve
Bring: -- Blanket, maybe a pillow, lawn chair
-- bug repellant
-- camera capable of taking time exposures
-- cable release
-- tripod
-- extra batteries
-- binoculars for stargazing, if you have 'em
-- red flashlight (if you have a white flashlight, put some red plastic over it. A Skittles wrapper works reasonably well)
-- Bug Repellant
-- Toilet paper
-- Food for a supper time picnic
-- snacks for star gazing

Some information and directions are available here
http://www.rasc.ca/lpa/torrancebarrens.shtml

A group of us did this the past few years and had a good time.
Thought I would start a little earlier as there is lots to
shoot here even in the day time and there are some marked
hiking trails around some small lakes.

For your convenience I have arranged for...

1 -- The sun to set at 8:29 PM
2 -- A meteor shower called the Perseid during the night

Tim

Would love to attend this, but will be arriving back in TO that night from Europe. I was actually thinking about this annual event just a couple of days ago and was sad when I realized the conflict in dates. :(

Nikon has posted an article on star trails photography under their Learn & Explore site. This is a pretty basic article, but it may interest those who are new and want some quick and easy tips. Here is the link.

to make the most of this event, camping or sleeping in vehicles would be a good idea (there were porta potties last time I visited). The Perseids could last all night so it would suck leaving as they're firing up.

The problem with doing the barrens on the weekend of the meteor shower is it will be packed with noisy icky people, a bunch of hippies with acoustic guitars that can't sing yet still try. It was last year at least. I lasted an hour befor leaving. Found a quiet spot on the side of the road to shoot just down from the park. I don't want to poop on Tim's event and I'm sure it will be a pile of fun regardless but people need to be prepared for the strong possibility that it's gonna be very busy.

I'll also just be getting in from a trip -- so I can't make it up there in time. :(

p.s. Sorry for not being very active for the past couple of years...

If anyone is looking for a complimentary activity before the Torrance Barren event I am going to post a short waterfalls shoot at High Falls. Afterwards we will stop for lunch in Gravenhurst and then on to the Barrens.

If you want to capture the stars without the star trails. use the Rule of 600.

600 divided by the focal length of your lens. (For a 17mm lens, 600/17= 35sec. meaning you can leave the shutter open for 35 seconds to avoid the star trail.

For those going to the Torrance event, or just interested in night sky photography, you may find this blog post by Art Wolfe interesting.

The weather is still looking a little on the wet side but the event is still a go. Last year we left just after sunset due to the weather but got some beautiful shots up until that time. So bring some rain gear and your macro lens and enjoy the scenery. I will be there by 3pm.

Also don't forget chairs and or blankets to sit on as there are no picnic tables there. There is a portapotty and that is all.

Does anyone have any samples of past outings ? Can you post them please, I'm curious to see the results. I'm wondering if there are any circular time exposures.
Thanks

Thank you to everyone who came out. It was a wonderful day to shoot and some of the meteors were so large and bright.
Now to have a nap before sunrise :)

Thanks for organizing Tim! As always, the first rule of Torrance barrens is someone has to give up and leave for home so the weather can get better! I'm glad we stuck it out as we saw quite a few stars! :)

Tim, great event as always. Thanks for organizing. It was not as rainy as predicated and what rain we had didn't last and we did get to see shooting stars and some nice stars views.

Here is the link to the article in the Toronto Star on the new dark sky site I mentioned yesterday. I thought it was closer to the east side of TO, but it is actually further away then Torrance (about a 3 drive for me from the west side). Plus, based on the description in the article of the site, it doesn't sound very appealing beyond using it for star gazing unlike the Barrens where you can enjoy hiking and beautiful natural surroundings. So probably not much of an alternative option.

Most observers, visual and astrophotographic, pretty well have a singular focus when visiting these sites and hiking trails usually don't factor into their visit. I'd guess that most users will be local and may be host to star parties in the future.

Torrance is a wonderful preserve but I don't remember it as a super friendly place for setting up serious equipment.

Along Southwood Road to Torrance Barrens.

Normally I try and make HDR look as natural as possible, but I wanted to give this an other-worldly feel.
