I would love to come, but I am camera-less... DSLRs are expensive :( unless someone has an extra laying around for a noob to try out for the day

Any camera will do. A point and shoot. An old film camera lying around. Or even just the camera on your phone. Remember it's not the camera, it's the person behind the camera. Plus no camera needed for the social.

Cameraphone? In fact you don't even need a camera, come out and ask which one to buy if you want. People are more than willing to give their opinion about what to buy. Although this is a SHOOT and social the social is the important part.

If you think cameras are expensive just wait until you start looking at lenses!

I guess that is sorta true, I did get one of my shots from my phone plastered all over popular websites http://io9.com/5822137/ :P

& also, I would be buying a t3i with the lens it comes with so I don't have to worry about that just yet

edit: to be honest the camera certainly does matter if you wish to be taken seriously, somehow I don't think you'd get the job at a wedding (etc.) if you showed your portfolio of cellphone pictures

There ya go, c'mon out and listen to a pile of people convince you the t3i is no good, you need a full frame Fujikony instead.

I dunno man, flippy screen, 7d sensor, 18mp, neato built-in features. Seems like the perfect starter DSLR.

Also, now I am visualising that you just go around taking pictures like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A-Y6pAMa_VY

I am not trying to convince you of anything gear wise, in fact you may find I am a fan, most of the time, of the 7D sensor. Come out and my post will make a lot more sense. One of the many functions of the social is for us to try and convince each other that the brand one person selects sucks and should instead be another brand. It's all in good fun. Especially if you've decided correctly, on Canon. See? Like that.

Now its up to me to maybe find a used one where the owner isn't trying to ask more than what they are worth brand new from the store...

Take a look at the sell section. You can definitely find some decent deals.

A little off topic, but should I be worried about shutter actuations (does it cost a lot to repair the shutter)? How long do DSLR bodies last?

If photography doesn't turn into anything besides a hobby I would want to keep the body as long as possible.

I am truly sorry folks. I had a bit of a fender bender on the way down. I hope everyone had (is having) a great time.

There's little point in thinking long-term when you are picking up a digital slr. You have consider that much of the computing technology will start leaving your old bodies on the obsolete heap. Just get what you can afford and plan your investment strategy around lenses. Think on that and start a new thread for more explanation

My thanks to Jordan and company for a great time today. I hope to gt together again soon.
