Hi all,

as some of you know - I spend a lot of time in Haliburton Forest this time of year, as I lease my own campsite in the forest with a trailer on it. I would like to put together a landscape photography weekend for TPMG folks who are interested ... So here is what I am proposing:

The workshop would be held on either the weekend of August 17th-19th, Friday-Sunday. or August 31st to September 2nd. We will pick the weekend which is more popular amongst those who want to go.

This will be a CAMPING weekend -- so you will need to have gear and be prepared to camp. I will arrange for up to 2 sites at Mina Lake. Each of these camp sites can accomodate 2 tents - so we could have a total of 4 tents at Mina Lake, and depending on the number of participants - 1 or 2 tents at my site is possible. I am happy to host folks for dinner at my site, and we can cook on the open fire or in the trailer.

We will be doing early morning excursions to the north end of the property, and some of the pristine lakes on the site for sunrise are stunning. We will also explore the gorge during the day, and some local waterfalls and the log chute nearby the forest area off of highway 35. There may also be wildlife viewing possibilities during our drive through the forest, as I have stumbled upon Moose in the past while exploring. We will also hit the wolf centre for those who want to go. There is lots to see. We will also build in some time to relax and take a swim at the lake. The water is beautiful!

Cost: So the cost is going to be divided among the participants. The cost of the campsite rentals are $15 per night, and there is a $15 per day per person charge. So you are likely looking at around $50 each, plus food and gas expenses. On Saturday night - we will have a potluck dinner at my trailer and campfire following.

So at the moment - this is a feeler - I will need to book the campsites fairly quickly - so that we can get them - so please indicate below your preference of weekend and interest!

David

Update: OK, now this is a reality, and August 10th to the 12th is the date chosen.

Count me in. I have a great tent which goes up easily and sleeps 10 or 12 people. I would need a ride though.

I like this idea, but would not be able to leave Toronto until 6:30pm on the Friday, which would probably mean not getting to Haliburton until after 10:00. I would have a better chance of making it on the Aug. 17-19 weekend.

Count me in, but the second choice of August 31 - Sept 2 would be better for me.

I just remembered I have another commitment for that weekend, and the later weekend is already busy. I might be able to do Aug. 17-19, but won't know until closer to the time, so I guess that takes me out. I will see what I can find out about my other commitment.

Ok ... so far its looking like the mid August weekend is winning..... I know that Maureen really wants to go, but she can't come that weekend - would anyone object to us having it on the August/September weekend? Labour day weekend is not until the following week. It comes late again this year.

OOPS!!! I just realized I was way off --- that is the labour day weekend --- ok forget it. I can't do that weekend, as Shannon and I are at the trailer for that weekend and the week that follows it.

So perhaps -- we should look at an alternative weekend. I will take a quick look at my schedule. The weekend of August 11/12th works well for me.

The Aug 11/12 weekend is better for me, although it would still be late Friday before I could get there. I am currently signed up for Torrance Barrens, but would choose this one instead.

Unfortunately that won't work for me as I wanted to do Torrance Barrens and it's also on the 11/12 weekend.

Actually I just realized that even Torrence Barrens is probably going to be out for me - I wanted to go to the Fergus Highland Games and its the 11-12 August weekend this year. Crap! looks like both events maybe no goes for me.

I am hoping to do the Durham Highland Games on the last weekend in July, in order to avoid the conflict with Torrance Barrens. It is the same weekend as the Toronto Island event, which is the reason for my maybe there, but if I can keep the Sunday free I will do both events that weekend.

I'll be up at the cottage the weekend of the 11-12 of August since I'm off from the 7-17 of August. Unless I can get a ride from someone on the way up there from the cottage I can make it.

I am sure that could be arranged -- possibly Maureen could pick you up.

I am sure it's sarcasm with the best intentions. :) Hoping I can do this as it would be a fun event.

Do we know when we will need to make a decision? I am getting concerned because I have been working a lot of weekends lately, and don't know whether I will be able to get an entire weekend off. I will be trying to get the weekend of July 21/22 completely off, and that attempt should give me a better idea of my chances for another weekend.

Not entirely sarcasm. The Forest has great fishing, especially the hike in lakes.

Yes! Fishing is good ... but there are some really big issues going on with the lakes. Havelock lake has the spiny water flea which is causing problems with the fisheries.... as it trickles down into the other lakes eventually... and the rock bass is also causing problems with the trout numbers. So the fisheries in HF are good now ... but hopefully with a bit of work, can maintain for the future. They are currently studying the lakes this summer, and they are stocking some of the lakes.
