I'll be moving at the end of June and retain my apartment until the end of July so I figured this might be a neat opportunity to host a small food photography event at my empty apartment :)

What: Food Photography
Where: 350 Lonsdale Rd, St. Clair West and Ave Rd
When: Saturday Sept 29th at 11am
Bring: Food to shoot (there is a grocery store within walking distance), any props you would like to use. I have one set of strobes... if someone else would like to bring theirs that would be cool!
Cost: FREE! You are responsible for your own food...so cost is up to you.

Some of my stuff: http://www.flickr.com/photos/eastyorkph ... 536748487/ as an example of the fun stuff you can create

I've got space for 4 set ups: 2 natural light and 2 for strobes, so we have to all share and play nice :)

Kitchen area will be free for prep if you need it.

Just bring your own stuff to shoot.. maybe try to team up ahead of time if you know you would like to shoot natural and share props and food costs with a partner. Since it's a small event, please make sure if you cannot make it to unregister and allow new people to sign up.

I'll do a short intro at the beginning to go over ideas and tips that I've picked up myself. If there is a trick you would like to try I'm more than willing to try it with you or teach it if I know it. Like creating fake mist on glasses or staging a sandwich with toothpicks, making fake ice cream etc.

I would actually like to try some food photography but I'm already doing a photo event that day. Any chance of an alternative day?

We can see what attendance is like, if people are available on a different day we can look at moving it

It's possible but not for this event. I've already limited it to 10 people and don't want to cut out photographers for chef's. If this event is fun and people want to do another, we can see after that.

Of course! You don;t have to cook anything. Maybe pick up some pretty cupcakes or fruit for still life? The possibilities are endless :)

Excellent video. We can certainly talk about making the "HERO" food that's used (the prepped, perfect product) in shoots vs the McDonalds burger she bought at the restaurant. I've done a bit of layering with sandwiches in the past. It's a tricky process to get it just right - toothpicks and tweezers become your best friends. We can also talk about some of the tools I keep around to make life easier.. like the syringe the stylist used to place the ketchup on the burger.

I'm by no means a food stylist - but it can be quite fun to play around with once you see the tricks they use behind the scenes. Maybe I should have done a clinic first and then we shoot lol.

I'll be attending most likely, but not shooting. Just a helping hand if needed otherwise I'll be listening in and trying to stay out of the way. I don't want to sign up and take a spot up. This will be an informative event folks, you'll never look at a good food image passively again after this.

there was a documentary on a guy who does these commercial shoots for fast food chains and he does not use real food at all, instead he uses materials that imitates real food. so I was actually surprised to see Simon's video.

Laws have changed in some places regarding food images. Depending on what the purpose of the image is it has to be "edible" in the US and Canada I think.

Yupp things have changed in the last few years. You can check out places like ASC (Advertising Standards Canada) for rules and regulations on food advertising. There is also information if you are a CAPIC member on their member site. I think the states is a little more lax as per usual. Most of the guidelines are about the color of food and sizing as well. It's interesting stuff (well at least I think so :P )

Hi guys,
I'm sorry but I'm going to have to postpone this event for now. However, I have been in talks with the St Lawrence market and they have a kitchen studio that is available to rent. Once I can nail down a price from them and a few dates I'll be sure to update.

Sorry everyone who signed up!!

Alright hungry people...we are back in business!! My sincere apologies for the delay... I have a good reason, you'll see at the event. :)

That being said the new date is Sept 29th! And the event is still FREE! and still DOWNTOWN! HORRAY! We will be at 350 Lonsdale Rd..which is right off the St. Clair West Subway station. It's also right near a HUGE Loblaws. So for those that don't want to trek food around...you can simply go before the event. The room we'll be in (it's a condo party room) has a full kitchen for our use... so if you need to heat something up or chop something... go for it.

Hopefully everyone can still make it. Can everyone please confirm in the thread that they are still in?
