Details:
What: ROM Ramble
When: Friday April 20, 2012
Time: 6:00 PM Sharp
Where: In the main lobby of the ROM at the entrance of Bloor at the Chrystal (next to the gift store)
Cost: Entrance fee is $9.00 ($8:00 if you are a student with ID and age between 15 - 25)
Bring: Cameras, flash, cash

This is a repeat of an event from a few years ago. We will visit the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) and photograph in the museum for a couple of hours and then retire to a local establishment for sustenance (liquid or food or both). Try to arrive before 6:00 PM to buy your admission ticket if possible to maximize shooting time. On Friday evening the entrance fee is reduced from the regular $15 to $9.

The basic plan is as follows.
Meet at the entrance at 6:00 PM. We will proceed into the museum and scatter.
Shoot as you wish; where you wish. No need to try and stick together as a group. If you have particular galleries you want to shoot go for it.
When the ROM closes we will rendezvous outside the entrance at 8:30 PM. From there we will determine a place to eat if that is desired.

PLEASE NOTE: The ROM closes at 8:30 PM and they will begin to chase us out of the galleries at 8:15 PM. This event will start at 6:00 PM sharp. If you are late just proceed to shoot and meet at the meeting point when the ROM closes (see plan above for meeting point).

The Royal Ontario Museum allows photography in the general galleries. The following are some rules to follow for this event:
1. Photography with flash and video recording is permitted in most permanent galleries for personal use only, with hand-held equipment.
2. The use of tripods, monopods, etc is not permitted.
3. Photography is not permitted in special exhibitions.
4. All bags entering or leaving the Museum are subject to inspection by Security staff.
5. Camera bags must not exceed 16" x 12" x 6" in size.
6. Visitors are required to carry backpacks at their side (backpacks must meet size restrictions)

You may bring and shoot with any camera or lens you wish and use either digital or film, however, I am also providing an Event Challenge. This is a challenge to participants to shoot the event with particular equipment or techniques, etc. This is a new idea of mine that allows for the setting of event limits without anyone feeling they are limited from attending if they cannot or do not wish to meet the challenge. Thoughts?

Event Challenge:
Shoot this event meeting all three conditions.
    1. Use a mirror-less or similar camera (e.g. range finder style) anything other than a SRL.
    2. Use only a 50 mm lens (or equivalent) or less
    3. DO NOT use flash

Again the event challenge is NOT binding. Come and participate in the challenge, or just come and join in the photography anyway you want. The important thing is to come.

Information:
The Royal Ontario Museum is located on the south west corner of Bloor Street West and Queens Park.
TTC access from the Museum stop on the Spadina/Young subway line or the St. George stop on the Bloor/Danforth subway line.
Green P Parking is located at 9 Bedford Road and 37 Yorkville Ave. There is also public parking under the Manulife Centre at Bloor and Bay Street.
If you park at 9 Bedford ask for a coupon/parking voucher when buying your Museum admission and pay $5.00 flat rate after 6:00 PM.

Cool idea! And I love the ROM. Would love to try out my x10 inside (I will try and stick to 50mm or less).

I am just a maybe right now to make sure nothing comes up - April is turning into a very busy month.

SRLs are perfectly welcome. The challenge is voluntary; there is no mandatory requirements on the event. Shoot what ya got.

Just to be clear, the event challenge is optional. It is a way for participants to try pushing their creative envelope by setting some limitations on the shooting tools. But it is not a mandatory requirement. My thinking when I came up with the idea of the Event Challenge was to have events where we could set up criteria that makes the participant perhaps work outside their comfort zone or allows them to try new things, but not have it limit participation. Or generate a lot of posts about the criteria.

Bring and shoot with any equipment you wish to use. And if you wish to take on the challenge, cool. 8)

I will definitely try - just don't know if I'll make it down in time as I work in the burbs of the city.

I'm leaving shortly from the edge of Mississauga. If all goes well I will be there for 6:00 PM or minutes after. Because the ROM closes at 8:30 PM we could see about dropping in on Maureen's show for the last half hour.

Thanks for organizing this event Daryl! It was informative, interesting and fun all at the same time. Although I would suggest that we consider wearing club clothing the next time we go there!

Well, it was a small turn out. Just two of us, but a good shoot just the same. Thanks for joining me Jordan.

Turned out the ROM is having some kind of special events on Friday nights that includes wine, food and music. It was like being in a club!

And yes I am aware the scooters are not vespa's. It just sounds better.
