What: Some more street photography
When: Saturday April 14, 2012
Time: 3pm
Where: St. Lawrence Market, Distillery District and nearby areas (meet-up in front of St. Lawrence Market)
Bring: Camera, and whatever else you might want to bring

Hello All,

I thought I would try my hand at organizing a street photography shoot, but change things up a bit and take us away from the West side of downtown to the east side. We will begin off meeting in front of the St. Lawerence Market and do some shooting inside. Being in very close quarters will definitely help to challenge people and force everyone to get up close and personal with their subjects. We will then head over to the Distillery District and continue our shooting there.

As I myself am just starting out with street photography I cannot really offer any sort of helpful tips before hand, but hopefully some of the experts on the forum will join us and be able to answer any questions some new members may have.

At the conclusion of the street shoot we will head out for some food and hopefully, as has been the case with prior shoots, take some time to go over the days shoot and even show off some photos from previous shoot and get some input from each other.

Jordan, if you end up with a group at distillery, they may stop you & ask for permit. They have a fee for permit but will waive it for photography clubs.

Thanks Eddie!

If the past street photography sessions are any indication, most of us will split off and do our own thing and just randomly meet up until the official meet point/time. So hopefully we won't have an issue, but I will mention this to everyone before hand.

Hello All,

I am doing a small update to this event (event info updated). I am suggesting we still meet at 3pm but in front of St. Lawrence Market and do some shooting inside (can have some great people, food and other shots). We'll probably be there about an hour (or less) and make our way up to the Distillery at that point.

Usually they only bother you if you seem to be shooting commercially (photography workshop, wedding or fashion...), or if you are shooting in a building that has a no photograph sign like Blazacs Cafe. In the rare case that they do insist on a permit then just leave and shoot Corktown.

The area where the old Dodge truck was is fenced off and dug up as of last Sunday. But everything else is accessible.

I am placing my name on the maybe list. I have some friends down in the morning for a photography shoot in High Park. Not sure if that will end in time for me to switch over and join this event. But I hope so.

So far looks like the Saturday might escape the rain! I'll keep a close eye on this as there is little point in having a street shoot in the rain (well not for me as my camera has no weather sealing).

Depending on which station you turn too we may or may not get rain on Saturday (at least during the time of the shoot). I will keep an eye on the weather and decides saturday morning if it's a go. At any rate for those of you joining me, if you'd like my cell number please PM me. I may not be noticeable as I'll have my small retro looking point and shoot instead of my professional looking DSLR to ID me.

Well, I am out... I was a maybe, but I literally just got out of bed and dressed. :) We just finished a fashion show at the AGO last night. 3 days of little sleep.

Thanks everyone who came out, even if the weather was not fully cooperating and that the distillery district seems to be loosing its charm. It was an early day, but it was still fun. I'll post a few photos in the next day or two once I've gone through them.

Indeed, it seems to be a one trick pony. Once seems to be enough, maybe it's the crowd that goes there that gives it a meh feel.

Possibly, plus all the development going up around it. It just doesn't look historic anymore. I did find the St. Lawrence Market much better for photos.

Here are a couple from today, more are up on my Flickr page.

I've been to both the distillery district and the Guild inn so many times, and have either taken repeat shots too many times, or watched the small details that made the place interesting slowly disappear.

However, they're always a great go-to place to try a new camera since you know what you are able to get there. I got the eight shots I wanted with a new (to me) camera, and that was good. Now to find the place to get them developed.

Thanks to Jordan for organising.

Thanks for organizing the event, Jordan. I really like how the light is gradually more prominent as you go from the edges of the photo to the center, where the subject is. A good example of not needing to follow the rule of thirds!
