What: Credit River Kayak Race
When: Sat. March 31 2012
Time: 12:30pm???
Where: Portico Community Church Parking Lot (Streetsville)
Bring: Camera

There is a whitewater kayak race on the Credit River on March 31. The race starts in Streetsville and ends at Erindale Park.

http://www.whitewaterontario.ca/view-fu ... w/177.html

I am trying to find more information on this. According to the website, this is an all day event, but I found a link for last year's race which shows it starting at 1:00pm, north of Portico Community Church in Streetsville.

http://www.whitewaterontario.ca/attachm ... 11Info.pdf

If anyone can find any more information, particularly for this year's race, please post it. The details are subject to change if I can find more information on the event.

If this is the one I'm thinking of, there will be canoes racing as well. Water levels are kinda crap so it would be interesting to see how they hang the gates.

I didn't even think about the water levels.

Janet I'm a maybe for now. Just need to clear the schedule for this day. Low water will be fun as well. If I can scout the route it'll be cool to see them portage and navigate the anklebreakers.

Racers don't get to portage. If they get off the water, they're dq'd and that run wiped.

actually, reread OP and this may not be the race I was thinking of, unless they've moved it downstream. The one I know was held by the hockey rink and large parking lot in Streetsville off Church St., this one is in Erindale Park.

There's also a downriver race on a later date which is basically a sprint. Can be exciting depending on water levels and river features.

At least those were the rules when I raced open canoes. You want fun, hit the Gull River slalom races in September. Unbelievable skill levels. Haven't done that in a few years, amazing time and great crowds/friends. Very chill...

I think it might be the same, with a change of the start. The person who told me about it said that the best place to shoot was behind the arena, but he went a few years ago.

I would like to do this but I am up north on the 31st. Back in the distant past I WW kayaked and I worked this race as a safety and I have kayaked the river from Streetsville to Erindale Park. Back then one of the best places to see and photograph the action used to be by the mill on the south end of Streetsville, as that was where the old dam was and the only really significant drop or white water. Not sure if this area is still accessible or not. The original owners of the mill used to support the race and allow access, but now I think it is owned by Kraft and I don't think they are as community minded.

There is another race on the Humber River on April 21; I may try that one if the timing doesn't work out for me to go the Alphabet Challenge that day. I haven't found a start/end location for that race - it would require some googling.

I used to participate in the Humber River race. I didn't know it still ran. Low river flow was a problem for that race. If it is the same race it used to start at the north end of Rowntree Park (access of Islignton Ave north of Finch) near the Steeles Ave bridge over the east branch of the Humber River. It used to end at the water pumping site just south of the 401 (access off Weston Road across from the Loblaw store). The likely best place for photography and only part resembling white water was a narrow channel under the twin bridges on Albion Road just north of Weston Road. You would have to park in Pine Point park and walk up the trail to the bridge.

The PDF I found was from last year - I couldn't find details for this year, so I am using that as a guide.

No, no. I only had the date in my calendar and hadn't logged onto the page since you had posted it.

Now I'm even less certain about whether I can make it to this one.

They moved the race, because of the low water levels, so that it started at Erindale Park and ended south of the QEW. As a result, I ended up spending more time looking for canoes and kayaks than actually shooting them (there was no info about the change that I could find).
