Details:

I'm in the mood for some light painting and I could use a few partners in crime.

What: Light Painting
When: Fri. June 10, 2011
Time: 8PM
Where: Mill St. Brewery
Bring: Camera (duh), Tripod, dark clothes, Flashlights, Sparklers, Other things that make cool lights, Steel Wool, bug spray, sense of adventure

Okaley dokaley, I've never organized one of these Ad-hoc's before, but everyone has to start somewhere.

I tried doing some light painting on my own at Cherry beach this week, and it seems like it would be easier if there were different people operating the camera and the "lights"

Since sunset is rather late this time of year, I thought we could meet for some drinks first, discuss what kind of shots we would like to do, and then go out there and make it happen. Ideally the group would be smallish, but if a bunch of people want to come out, I propose we just split it up into two groups (arranged at the pub) [or even three groups if it is crazy popular].

Cherry beach for the light painting works for me, since parking is ample and free (people can hitch rides from the pub if they don't have wheels);

Map to pub:

If you have never done light painting before, photojojo put together a little video giving an introduction...

A couple of my shots from last week (done solo):

did you blend two images to get the cn tower/toronto skyline nicely exposed in the background? or did it just work out that way? i viewed the photojojo clip and she suggested f/22 or so. just curious.

just do a long exposure, expose for the skyline lights, try getting a speed as low as 20s at least so you can spin your stuff around and make it register on film/sensor

Precisely as PotatoEYE said; I got the skyline exposed correctly for the 20-30 second shot, then I went in and did my 'painting' during that window on the next exposure. (I don't really do any post production on my shots other than some cropping - I don't even know how to blend images)

I'll certainly try to do the orb thing again.

I'm still looking for a suggestion for a bar to meet at downtown. As I am not a beer drinker, I don't want to be the decision maker on this point.

Suggestions?

I'm a maybe for now but you can try Mill St Brewery which is near Cherry Beach or Bier Markt at the Financial District, although it's a bit pricey and gets a bit clubby after 9pm.

No synthetic clothing blends or uncovered hair would also be a good idea. Sorry I don't know the area well enough to recommend a pub.

I think I'm gonna go with Alvin's suggestion for the Mill St Brewery.
I'll update the information above.

Since it's a friday night in the distillery district, I'll also call ahead and see if I can book a table for ?? 10 people? (so many people are a maybe...)

Thanks to Pam for reminding about avoiding synthetic clothes and try to cover your hair - there may be some sparks flying...

Also, I forgot to mention that bug spray would be a good idea. The mozzies come out after dark and I hear they consider photographers a delicacy.

would powerful green lasers be too thin to shoot?

What do we hold the steel wool with? Coat hangers, string?

I'm up for anything being more flammable - why do you think we are drinking first?

What laser class is the green one? I'm certainly not known for being particularly safe; but having the laser damage someone's camera sensor, or worse, someone's personal imaging sensor (their eye) would be terrible. (That said, I'm still not opposed to trying it out - just balancing it with the ambient may be a challenge)

With respect to holding the steel wool, I use a metal chain.
Here's a little tutorial on flickr about the technique:

Flash light on a short cord, only dangerous if you hit yourself in the head 8)

ok, forget my green laser then, it's pretty damn strong ad even has a safety lock with key.

I'll look for a chain tomorrow after work and some steel wool.

Are you planning to shoot at Cherry Beach? I'll probably park there and walk to the Distillery.

Alright party people, Mill St. Brewpub doesn't take reservations for the weekend, so it's my intention to get there around 7:45 and hang around the entrance until at least a couple other folks show up.
I'll be sporting the black baseball cap, black top, black (or just dark) pants, black (and grey) shoes, and black camera (sorry, I don't have a TPMG bright orange luggage tag thing)

You can PM me for my phone number.

I also heard a weather report calling for rain late tonight; but the prognosticators of weather are frequently incorrect, and I don't know what "late" means. I'm bringing an umbrella just in case...

If you are bored at work today, have a look though the Light Junkies or Light Painting groups on flickr for some inspiration. I'd love it if people had a plan for a couple of shots they would like to do.

Assuming the weather is ok I'll be there. I'd like to take a crack at a nice clean sphere. Maybe a flashlight of some sort.

Clouds seem to be thinning at the moment so hopefully the rain will stay away till really late night.

Gonna be lounging around the area then head towards the pub around meetup time, see you guys there.

I won't be able to make it to the pub in time, what's the shooting location for this? Cherry Beach or the islands?

I am assuming. Cherry Beach since no one said otherwise in response to my earlier question.

Cherry Beach is the plan; but the hourly forecast is now calling for the rain to start falling before sunset. Decision will be made at the pub (but it's not looking good right now)
