Camera Not Required
Session 1: The Subject

When: March 30, 2011, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. (with a break half way through)

Where:
Sick Kids
The Daniels Hollywood Theatre, Main Auditorium
Room Number 1246 Black Wing, 1st floor
(Entrance from 555 University Ave or Elizabeth St.)

Cost: Free (donations to Sick Kids, no matter how small, will be appreciated)

Email: solis.meretrix@gmail.com

After nights upon nights spent poring over useless user manuals you have finally figured out how to set your camera to the little green icon; you're also fairly confident you know which button takes the picture

If this one goes smoothly there will be more sessions that will build on previous sessions while expanding into other aspects of photography.

The space is mammoth so feel free to bring friends and family. I expect some 50% of the audience to be non TPMGers.

If this one works out we will 2 more sessions on related but different topics.

Our host Sam says:

Starbucks and Tim Horton's on the premises, as well as our cafeteria, which has an awesome menu, for those who want to have a quick dinner or snack, before the session starts.

Hey Ryan, is this event catered towards beginners, intermediate or advanced photographers? Or is the skill set of the photographer irrelevant to the context of the workshop?

The workshops do not discuss technology or technique; we don't memorize rules and formulae. We learn to "think with our eyes," independently, to make conscious choices, both semantic and purely aesthetic, to build our own opus on the great foundation of centuries past.
I am pretty sure that skill is irrelevant in this case, unless you already developed the vision. But even so, I am sure sometimes it is being lost throughout the life of a photographer until they meet again...

The series is a introductory look at photography as a subject with a history rather then that of a how to use a cameras as a technical skill.

In this first session my part is weighted towards creative learning as it relates to photography. While Vilk's part is quite well explained in the in the description at the top of this page.

So the session may be too advanced or not advanced enough independent of your skill level at using a camera with it's associated equipment.

You can always sit at the back and walk out during if it ends up not to be for you.

As per the first paragraph of the invitation, it's definitely for beginners--people who do own a camera, do know how it may "take pictures," but are not quite sure what to do with this knowledge. I will explain every new concept at this level. If you consider yourself past that stage, but never heard of "semiotic code," "cognitive dissonance," or "synecdoche," you might find something interesting there as well. (Please do not be alarmed, command of Greek and Latin is not required.)

Warmest thanks to you all for your fabulous patience, keen interest and valuable feedback!

Responding to frequent questions--You will find the photographers I talked about on my personal favourites list at http://vilk.net/waveone/Photogs.html (mostly links to Google images, but it should be a good launch pad for more specific research).

All the best! See you in two weeks.

Vilk

Wow - what an awesome launch point to some great photgraphers.

Were planning on the same location, were not sure if it will be on a Wednesday we might switch it to a Tuesday or Thursday.

Looks like:

Session 2 Thursday April 14

Session 3 Tuesday April 26
