Details:

What: Photo Book Gathering
When: Tuesday March 8th DATE CHANGE
Time: 6:30PM
Where: Golden Griddle - Carleton & Church St.
Bring: Bring your favourite photo books!

We haven't done this for a couple of years, so I thought it would be good to do another get-together. The concept is simple: Bring along your favourite photography related books, to share with the group. The idea is that you might be thinking of 'what to buy next' or maybe you've heard of a particular photography related book, and someone might have it there for you to check out. Kind of like going to Chapters and hanging out, and reading books... but in a more social environment.

Photography related books can be instructional, or not.

So would you be adverse to someone coming if they *didn't* have a book to bring along? My photography book collection is all rather "vintage" (as in old and falling apart) and likely not of much interest to the group, but I would love to take a look at what others have and find useful/enjoyable....

I plan on bringing a vintage book -- mostly for the way they mounted the colour plates is rather amusing.

If you have nothing to share -- I still welcome you to come along and join in the festivities! I am sure there will be enough people - such as myself that will bring along material to look over.

Oh by the way -- people should make sure to mark their books with a post-it note, or tape, or something.

What? No librarian?

I may have the same piece of paper, but I make a very poor substitute

I bought these two last year out of the three I was looking for. Both are well written.

Wed looks iffy but if I'll have something else to do aside from this, I'll call a one day holiday and swing by if there is an interest.

I'll try to work around any date you set. I need to check out the art stores downtown for paper anyways.

Pictorial Maturity - Combining craft and creativity

"A visionary full of original thought, but lacking the skill to turn imagination into a presentable product will never reach an audience. A creative photographer without adequate control of the technical aspects of the photographic process will always struggle to create a print that reflects the intended feeling or mood.

On the other hand a skilled craftsman without any sense of creativity may produce a beautiful product but it is most likely a duplication of an already existing item. A photographer trained in the technical aspects of photography but lacking the essentials of creativity will be able to consistently produce technically perfect prints, but these prints will have little or no artistic individuality. Only when craft and creativity are joined can it reach an audience and be given a chance to be recognized and appreciated as fine art. "

Ralph Lambrecht, Way Beyond Monochrome

Just FYI... Next Tuesday is Shrove "Pancake" Tuesday and you're planning to meet at a Golden Griddle. My assumption is it will be very busy. A reservation, if such a thing is possible at the Griddle, may be a good idea. Or a location less pancakey.

I called them -- they didn't see the need for a reservation, while it will be busy, they said the restaurant is never full - but we now have a resveration just to play it safe.

You may not be worried but management may not be keen on a bunch of book reading loiterers on one of their, possibly, busiest nights when otherwise they'd have no problem with it. See what they say. They may want the tables for turnover. Just saying. I have no idea how busy they'll be, if at all.

Hello! I think this is a great idea and I'm looking forward to meeting members of the club (this will be the first event I'm able to attend since I joined in January!).

I'm a real newbie and bought a couple of "instructional" books to get me started. Probably much too basic for most in this group...but I'm aiming to get better all the time. I'll bring them with me in case there is any interest from other "newer" photographers that may attend.

I took a couple of classes at Henry's and am learning so much and loving it!

Cheers!

Thanks for organizing David.

Pam, Ryan this is a few selected works by Adelaide Hanscom the photographer artist who did the "Sonnets of the Portuguese" http://www.usablewebs.com/adelaide/sonnets.html and the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam http://www.usablewebs.com/adelaide/rubaiyat.html. Good lord I want to get a 1st edition of the former. She is credited for the first male nude to appear in a book quite a feat in their conservative time but I'm not so sure about the accuracy of that.

TWH, here it is. This guy rocks!! http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/pacifi ... cover.html

Thanks for organizing David, interesting books all around. Definitely worth a repeat.

Shuttereye. Sounds like a rare find to me. Illustrators are usually listed as authors, and I can't find Ms. Hanscom listed in the catalogues I've searched. If the website you sent is accurate you are looking for a very specific edition put out by a smaller press house, which may be difficult. The more information you can find out about the publisher, the more likely you or an antique book seller will be able to find it.

David - thanks for organizing! Great to meet some of the group! I look forward to more outings and will aim to bring an inspiring book to the next 'book club".

Shuttereye - thanks for the link. Really interesting story...who knows where interests and passions can take you! I'm looking forward to the Arctic, but definitely glad it won't be THAT cold up there!

Had a great time!

Cheers,
