Details:

What: Durham & Port Hope region Mill Tour
When: Saturday December 4th 2010
Time: 12PM
Where: Meet At Tim Horton's at Sheppard Ave & Kingston Rd - South east side.
Bring: Camera, Tripod, Warm Clothing, etc.

This is a pre-shoot event to the Lang Pioneer Village meetup. We will meet at the Tim Horton's at the south east corner of Kingston Road, and Sheppard Avenue/Port Union Rd. -- its beside the McDonald's on the south east corner of this intersection.

We will then proceed east from here -- the first mill that we will hit is in Bowmanville. I will put together a list of mill's in this area. Maybe we will have some snow? Who knows! At some point -- around 3:30 or 4pm - we will find a spot to have dinner - probably in Peterborough, and then we are proceeding to Lang Pioneer Village to meetup for 5pm with the remainder of the group.

Here is a quick map of where we are meeting -- the south east corner - there is a Mr. Sub and Tim horton's

David,
I really like to participate this event only. How far east are you guys driving? In a span of 4 hours (with driving), how many mills are you going to be visiting? I need to be back in Toronto by about 6pm. TIX.
May

Hi May,

ok -- I am thinking that we'll start in Bowmanville -- we'll stop at the Vanstone Mill which is downtown, then we'll head north to Tyrone for the Tyrone Mill. I thought that we would then probably head to the Fudge Mill which is in a little town called Campbellcroft. There is also Baltimore Mill - in the town of Baltimore, which I wouldn't mind hitting, and there is Molson Mill in the town of Port Hope. That would probably easily eat up the 4 hours. And then we would be heading to Lang Pioneer Village.

I don't think we would have time to visit Needler's mill in Millbrook -- its on the way up to Lang.

David

Thanks David. I only found 1 mill (Tyrone) that has a more detailed description. I was thinking of ploting all the mills' coordinates on my GPS to map out the routes. Where do you think I can find the information?

I can post the GPS info later tonight if you like. I have them listed in the Ontario Historic Mills book.

Is this event (including Lang Pioneer Village) need lots of walking?
If it does, how long?
I love to join, but I have a knee problem, which make me hesitate to decide.

I also have a bad knee.... The mill tour won't be tons of walking at all. Most of the mills are line of sight to the car. Lang will be more walking I'd suspect. But it's not a huge place compared to say upper Canada village in Morrisburg.

Here is GPS data:

Tyrone Mill
Lat: 44.00821 Long:78.72248

Molson Mill
Lat: 43.96767 Long: 78.29488

Ball's Mill
Lat: 44.03338 Long: 78.14631

I don't have the GPS for Fudges Mill -- but I know where it is, and Needlers Mill is in the centre of Millbrook.

Plus - there is the Hope Sawmill as well which is down the road from Lang, if we have time - we could head over there before shooting at Lang.

Thank you David. I will see everyone later. I am trying to avoid 401 so will be taking back roads to the meeting location. Wish me luck:)

Thank you David for organizing this. Only wish we had a whole day for it and exploring more mills. Hint hint, maybe a day trip with warmer weather

Thanks David for organizing this and adding it onto the Lang Pioneer Village Xmas Lights.

It made for a great day. A bit cold but still a fun day.

It was nice to see some snow at all the Mills.

Thanks guys.... we could definately do this in the spring.... as the rivers flow quite well... and there are a few spots which will be good for shooting. Plus - we can leave much earlier in the morning and hit more mills.

Here is a shot of Molson Mill that I liked from yesterday -- I shot film at Balls and Tyrone.
