Details:

What: Defying Gravity
When: Wed. July 14, 2010
Time: 6:30PM
Where: outside of Queen's Park TTC Station, on southwest corner of University and College Streets, in front of "Ontario Power" sign
Bring: camera, defying gravity items for photos (see below for more details)

The idea for this event is to photograph people and things that are "defying gravity", caught in mid-air. We could get some cool jump shots, hats in the air, perhaps clothing billowing out as people jump, open umbrellas, etc.

We'll meet outside the subway station, and then move on to another location that is more "jump friendly". If people wish to bring flashes, by all means, though I think that we'll plan to do this while the light is still pretty good for us non-flash folk.

If you can think of any good jumping locations, or any props that would make this more fun, please let me know!

Sounds like a good excuse to drop by Tap Phong, my favorite cheap prop place!

Walking home along Spadina I found adorable parasols, fake flowers and artificial fruit. I'm sure a lot of household objects could be used to create scenes in midair: Having tea, walking to school (in a group), smelling a flower, stopping traffic, pointing at an unseen event etc. We could also use a ladder/stool for the shooter.

A battery operated fan could also help sell the the gravity. I'll see what they have at Active Surplus.

Wow! And here I was thinking just jumping and wearing a swingy skirt to see how it looks in midair!

Sounds awesome, Pam. We should have a lot of fun!

noice!

Getting things to "fall" right is very tricky. One of my favorite shots took a number of tries to even get close to falling right. It takes patience for sure.

My buddy James (Seren Dipity) sent me this link and it fits with both the PS compostite and the defying gravity theme. It may provide some inspiration and ideas.

The Cloud Gardens or Cloud Forest on Richmond St. W and Bay is a good spot for jumping. It's a very popular place for parkour sports.

Thanks for the suggestion, Henry! I was also considering Graffiti Alley, the park north of Queen's Park, or possibly some locations at U of T. We can figure stuff out when we meet up.

And of course, if anyone needs my cell # before the event, please PM me before the day of the event.

Are Knives, Axes and Chainsaws optional?

If I get out of my dentist appointment early enough, I may try to join.

Yep, it is!

Yes, because some of us don't have flash aside from the built-in one. :)

And it's quite likely that we'll head over to a pub after the event for a bite to eat or a drink. :D
