I'm going on a road trip again this year across Canada... I've done it before and trust me, it takes a lot of planning and it's not cheap.

Camping is alot cheaper, but that means hauling alot of equipment. My wife and I could barely fit everything inside one car - we had near zero temps in several places in the middle of July, including Jasper, Mt Revelstoke and southern Saskatchewan. We had winter sleeping bags and winter coats with us.

If you drive non-stop, you can make it to Banff in about 48hrs. We spent almost $2000- in GAS alone driving a Saturn Ion from Toronto to Vancouver and back when gas was about $1.25/L, so unless you have 4 people, it won't be cheap. Then you'll have to factor in the wear and tear on the vehicle, 10,000KM is a lot of wear and tear and you'll pay for it sooner or later.

When we did our trip, we drove 12-14hrs per day and had destinations in each province and took 1 month to complete the trip. It takes 2 days of driving just to leave Ontario

If you can't afford the time-off (1 week to get there and back), you're better off flying out and renting a car.

I was going to drive out to Vancouver and back but decided there isn't anything I want to see after Thunder Bay so have decided to fly to Calgary. Will rent a car/SUV and spend a week or 1 1/2 weeks exploring the sights going to Vancouver and back to Calgary. This will give me a chance to break out my fly rod.

You might want to also consider flying into Calgary and out of Edmonton. I liked the drive btwn Jasper and Edmonton, it's quite different from Banff.

If you're going to be fishing, you have to check out Campbell River in BC...just amazing

I used to live in Comox and fished off the wharf in Campbell River. It's the only place in world I've been able to catch anything.

You know you can try going the other way. I am from Newfoundland and drove here from there in a 3.3 L and gas cost me just over 700. Some amazing things you pass on the little TCH through the Atlantic provinces. Sadly I only got into photography as a hobby after I moved.
