Details:

What: Cambridge Tour of mills, landscape, etc.
When: Tuesday, December 29, 2009
Time: 9:30AM
Where: Cambridge Visitors Centre (Hwy 401 & 24)
Bring: LUNCH, Camera Gear, Tripod are optional, Warm Clothing (hats, mitts, boots, hand & toe warmers, warm pants, etc.)

We will meet at the Cambridge Visitors Centre - take advantage of the bathroom, and then follow the tour around skipping a few of the spots.

Bring a lunch &/or snacks to nibble on the way, until we decide to stop for dinner some where. We can head for some food afterwards somewhere there or on the way home.

http://www.grandrivercountry.com/grcmap ... ridge.html
http://www.grandrivercountry.com/grcmap ... _Tour2.pdf

We will stop at #1, #2, #3, #4, #5, #6, (skip #7), #8, (skip #9), maybe choose #10 or #11 for a wilderness walk if people are interested, (skip #12, #13, #14, & #15), #16 - if intereseted, #17, #18, #19, & #20. This will bring us back to the beginning and close to the 401 again.

Maybe I'm ambitious, but many of the spots are private property so it will be just shots from the road, so these are likely to be brief stops of approx. 15 - 30 minutes or so.

Yes this is a week day and I know not everyone is not off during the Christmas Holiday.

Please make carpool arrangements in the post.

Seats are available in my van - leaving from Scarborough and heading across the 401.

North America doesn't have many castles like the ones you're probably used to in Europe.

I would guess so, judging by the original post:

That doesn't necessarily mean anything, and the question was directed to Maureen. Thanks.

Hi Maureen:

If you are looking for something in the same area as the castle what would you think of Wings Of Paradise? I have never been but was thinking of going out in the New Year as an Ad Hoc.

http://www.wingsofparadise.com/index.ph ... d=homepage

They allow photography including flash, but no tripods during regular hours (after 10:00 AM). They do offer a special pre-public entry for amateur photography groups during which tripods can be used. There is a special group fee if you want to book from 8 to 10 and regular admission is also applied. There is a minimum number of participants required.

Info on the special entry is found here;
http://www.wingsofparadise.com/index.ph ... d=1oDf9436

Unfortunately the day you are looking at won't work for me as I am working. The 28th would be nicer.

Daryl

We went there with Marcos a while ago, it is quite a small space, though has a nice amount of butterflies. Flash was enough for some macro work, yet it's probably only an hour max of shooting

I've been there before regular hours, with a group, a few times. They will let you keep your tripods up as long as there are not more preople arriving--so if no one comes for a couple of hours you would get extra time with the tripods. I found it a great place--butterflies are closer to the various paths, a little man made waterfall/stream, and they even brought out newly hatched butterflies and put them on a leaf to photograph while they were drying out and unfurling. There were also small quail running around and a tree frog ( I never could find the frog).

personally.... I'd rather shoot some cool landscapes than flutterby's. Maybe some waterfalls, mills, or something like that.

So, why not do both? Shoot the sunrise on the way----get out of the cold for a 2 or 3 hours and shoot butterflies---grab a hot coffee/something to eat---then head around the back roads for landscapes / Mennonites / covered bridge are all nearby.

I will keep my eye on this post as I am free on that date and would love to get in some more camera time over the holidays. I would also be willing to carpool from Scarborough if someone needs a ride.

I did Wings of Paradise a few weeks ago. Maybe it's the time of year, but it didn't really impress.

Still working on where we will be heading and especially where to start from to save doubling back and forth. as well as a start time to best take advantage of a good part of the day.

I just did Wings of Paradise not to long ago and am looking at doing some Landscapes, Mills and / or Waterfalls out towards the Cambridge area or so. Just compiling a list of possible places and then deciding where it would be best to start.

So keep watching. Hoping to get it it and posted Wed or Thurs.

Hi All:

Here it finally is a tour through Cambridge taking in the Mills, Landscapes, etc.

We will meet at the Cambridge Visitors Centre for 9:30am and then head off following the tour map on PDF that is included. Cambridge is approx. a little more than an hour from Toronto depending upon where you are coming from.

More info above in original spot.

Maureen

P.S. Sorry no wings of Paradise, since I did that not to long ago, but feel free to set up an ad-hoc trip. It is a great place, fairly small, but you do get up close to the butterflies.

I think I'm going to pass on this -- been sick for the last week, and just starting to get past this throat infection. I think that a day out in the cold would not be the smartest move on my part. Hope you have a great time though!

While I'm tempted to call a seat in Maureen's van, getting me to Maureen's van requires the use of a car anyway.

Does anyone want a lift in the Northwest end of the city, Brampton, or Miss?

might be interesting to check out #19.... Millrace park. Just to see what might remain -- like an old millrace? Who knows.

There is also Apps Mill near Brantford which we could check out, if time permitts. But we have a nice full day schedule based on this tour.

I love the Blair Sheave Tower:
