Details:

What: Night Photography Downtown Walk
When: October 28th 2009
Time: 6:30pm
Where: Union Station
Bring: Camera, Tripod, Remote or cable release.

Some of you may have noticed that I have been AWOL lately at TPMG. Its a busy time of year, with several events going on including Nuit Blanche, and prep for our film festival at my work called Rendezvous With Madness. With all that said... I am taking some time to do what I love... photography!

So here is the deal. We'll meet at Union Station for 6:30pm in front of the station outdoors. We'll meet by the large VIA sign as that sticks out. We will then proceed north towards Dundas Square shooting along the way. Once we're done, we'll find a spot to go and have some food, and warm up. Come dressed for the weather! Bring light gloves, as it will probably be nippy.

If you have never tried night photography before! Here is a great chance to come out with some experienced members (ok well at the moment, I am the only one going, and I have experience)... but I am sure more people will sign up that have experience shooting in the dark. Anyhow, this could be a mentoring opportunity to those looking to learn the tricks of night photography.

David

Is there a fee for this photowalk? I don't have a remote shutter release, do you think the camera timer + tripod is good enough? Sorry I'm new to photography.

Simonc - there should not be any fees for an outing such as this, unless it was specified you were going to a place like Black Creek Pioneer Village (a favorite of lxdesign) or the Zoo or someplace like that. A camera timer and tripod and possbily mirror lockup should be perfect to get some good night time shots. Enjoy the event!

I'll be in Uxbridge during the day but hopefully I can make it down in time.

Wear black gloves or get a piece of black felt hold it in front of the lens for a second while you push the shutter and that should work for 5 second plus exposures.

Very cool technique - I had to think about it for a second...

I should note don't actually touch the lens or you will add some vibration when you move out of the way.

I use the technique when it's cold and you don't want to be bothered with remotes and such. Also mirror lock up is redundant as any vibrations damp out well before you remove your hand.

You can also use the same technique to do double exposures within one period of exposure.

Again, I never thought of that, very cool indeed!

Hope you guys won't mind dragging a new photographer (if I can call myself a photographer) to this event.
I just registered to TPMG and I'm thinking about taking avantage of this outing to meet people, introduce myself and learn.

Hoping to attend more events in the future, and looking forward to this one.

Sure but we are talking about discarding the first second or so of the exposure due to mirror slap and the initial vibration associated with that. The glove/black glove technique is yet another simple tool in the 'toolbox'

Ah yes... I keep a piece of black cardboard in my camera bag for this purpose. (I use it for anything longer than 10 sec. or so.)

Should I bring a particular lens? MF/AF prime or regular zoom? I'm going to travel light.

Looking at all these posts is intimidating... I just realized I know nothing about serious photography.

Anyway... I am here to learn. Can't wait until Wednesday.

hmmm ... don't think I can make this.

I love night photography, with timed exposures and painting with light! You can get some great colour from a night sky! Really cool!

Maybe another time.

Enjoy everyone!

Hi all.... Weather is not looking so hot for tomorrow night! Remember to bring your umbrella's! Yes, I am still planning the event even with rain in the forecast.... bundle up, and bring an umbrella... I might not be out shooting for long though, because I feel a head-cold coming!

I have also updated the meeting spot... there is no clock and statue anymore -- so lets meet at the large VIA sign.... if its raining ... closer to the building would work. We may even move inside by the east entrance to Front Street.

I'm hoping to still come but I seem to have developed a bit of a cold... I'll wait to see how I feel tomorrow I guess.
