For those of us who are coming later, are we just meeting you at the parking lot? Were there plans to go somewhere for dinner nearby or are you doing the picnic thing? Is there anywhere up that way to eat dinner? I've never been to Torrance Barrens, so I'm not sure what to expect.

I am taking something to eat there at supper time.
Picnic on the rocks by the lake.
There is nowhere nearby at all.
People wanting to eat on the way up might want to stop
in Barrie at the Bayfield exit as that is where all the malls and
fast food places are. (west of 400)
You also go through Orillia and Severn Bridge.
Orillia probably has a choice of eateries close to the highway.

As to where to find us - if you find Torrance Barrens you have found us :)
The place is not that large. From the parking lot it is about 300 -400
meters to the first viewing area / camping area.
From there it is about 750 meters to the rock outcropping.
A little harder to get around after dark though :)

So I'm finally confirmed and off the on-call duty. I will be leaving downtown around noon time. I can offer rides if anyone interested(send me a PM & meet location at @king subway). I may or may not stay after 3:00 AM( packing the tent just in case).

time to test the new toy. :D

I have a question for those that will be shooting digital tomorrow night.

Will you use your camera's long exposure noise reduction to combat the noise generated from the long exposure? Is it relatively easy to get rid of this noise in Photoshop?

I am going to try some with in camera noise reduction
and then will try the dark frame subtraction method also.

In camera for some higher iso shorter exposures
and dark frame for the low iso longer (15 min +) exposures.

Since I'm going solo, I'm not sure when I'm heading up.

If one or two people want to drive up part way to my house and come up with me, just pm me to let me know.

Another question for those who have been there before... Is the area very grassy or covered with plants? Just wondering how I'll do with my allergies up there. Thanks!

In that case, what time is it rising? Perhaps a bit later in the morning?

We left North York at 12:30 and so far we made it to Chris' house :-)

In our car we have Captain Tim, Sapg, Alice & Waterlooser.

Traffic is good after Newmarket :-)

Sunset was beautiful :-)
There are at least 20 of us here waiting for the meteor shower.

Hey all

I just arrived from there. I missed the meeting place. I only had the coordinates and I took a few shots of the sunset. And since I forgot the bug repellant, the mosquitoes were eating me alive. Next time I will be more prepared and I will print the directions!

Considerable cloud cover at sunset and into the night. Started clearing around 11pm. Followed by experimentation in exposures.

Discovered afterward that I had left a CP on my lens that was shooting startrails/meteors.

If I try this again in the coming evenings I'll be sure to remove the CP. Fortunately where I live there is a fair degree of stars available.

Got back to Brampton around 4am, and after dropping a sleepy Shelley off at her place, and taking a shower to wash off that bug spray, I'm about ready to hit the hay. My last shot (as all the others) looks like crap, unfortunately. Will have to do some research on Pentax cameras and astrophotography before we do this again. ;)

Hope you crazy people enjoy the sunrise!

I saw 3, I think. I know others saw more than that because I could hear their exclamations of delight at seeing them....

Yea Tim.

Great event and thank you for organizing it and the being the barrens host. Great chance to see a new place and experience a new photographic activity. I learned a lot including that I need to learn a lot more. I hope there will be a trip back in the fall for another star trails event.

It was an AMAZING morning for sunrise (lovely pastels over misted farmland), but I was fading away on the 400 and headed home. Great to hear that you and the rest found a place to capture the sun coming up.

Daryl

Agreed. It was a great trip even though the weather didn't cooperate as well as I would have liked it too.

I was also thinking of organizing another Torrance Barrens trip. Perhaps some time in Oct when the mosquitoes aren't so bad.

Here's a quick picture from the evening.
I think this was the only one that's even remotely ok :p

Please do that, October would be nice. The sky cleared up because I left.

Thanks for organizing, Tim. I may have gotten one decent one, in between hiding from the bugs.
