Details:

What: Waterfalls, Mills, Ghost Towns & Sunset of Muskoka Area
When: Sun. May 10, 2009
Time: 10:00 AM
Where: Coldwater Mill *NEW LOCATION*
Bring: Camera(s), Tripod, Monopod, Snacks/Lunch

An adventure into the Muskoka Area. We will meet at COLDWATER MILL. It is off Hwy 400 at exit 141 head east on county Rd 23 (Sturgeon Bay Rd) go until you reach Eplett St, turn right or south to Mill St then turn left and head to the mill. parking in back. If you miss Eplett road you will reach simcoe rd 17 (or coldwater road) turn right south and head to Mill St and turn right and follow to Mill.

http://www.coldwatermill.com/ mill info

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source= ... 18754&z=16

For those with a GPS the co-ordinates are Lat: 44.69647 Long: 79.6415

I was able to get us into the Mill as it is usually closed at that time. We will have about an hour. All they ask for is a small donation for this. All other locations will have no extra money involved except for dinner or anything you buy along the way.

Throughout the day we will visit mills, ghost town, and water falls and what ever we come across throughout the day.

We'll enjoy some food/dinner some where along the way. If the weather co-operates we can also take in a sunset before heading home also if people aren't to tired.

I've set a limit on this as some of the waterfalls would be very crowded with a very large group converging on them. May open up a few spots depending upon space availability

I know it's Mother's Day, but not all of us are busy on that day.

Looks like Tanner's handy dandy list does not include all the falls in Muskoka. We'll do our best to get the co-ordinates of these.

I'll be riding in Maureen's van.

Things to add to the list of what to bring: ND filters, remote releases.

I'm looking for some help with ND Filters. What shutter speeds and filters do you recommend?

Using the Sunny 16 rule with ISO100 gives me 1/100 shutter speed @ f/16. So a shutter speed of 1/15 requires about 3 stops of light attenuation or an ND8 filter (2^3). A shutter speed of 1/2 second needs 6 stops or ND64 filter (2^6). Did I get that right?

I have never photograhed waterfalls before so all advice and suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Bruce

I'm not an expert in this subject, but if you use a higher F-stop 22 - 32 this gives you a slower shutter speed and also the milky effect of the water and a lower amount for the ND filters that are needed. Preferably when it is overcast it is better for shooting waterfalls.

I have an ND split filter that I use to help with this, and also use F22 or higher to try and get a speed of 1/2 - 2 seconds or higher, depending upon the how overcast it is.

Hopefully David the waterfall guy can offer more advise on this.

I'd be interested in this if a spot opens up. I'll be driving and as usual will have to bail around 5/6pm to go home and walk the beast, er, I mean, my lovely dog

additionally -- lowest ISO is preferable. I use a combination of a 77mm ND8 filter, along with a polarizer sometimes. As Maureen indicated, it really depends on environmental conditions - overcast vs. hot sun. The results will differ greatly. I will be running another waterfalls workshop towards the end of June.

And make sure the sensor is clean. Using a high F-stop will bring out the dust spots.

Good news everyone who is attending please note I am going to change our meeting place from Cooper's Falls to COLDWATER MILL.

I have secured an interior visit of the mill for us for the same time of 10:00am. All they ask is for a small donation from each person and we have about an hour to see the inside of the mill.

NEW Meeting location: COLDWATER MILL
Time : 10:00am

I will adjust the posting above tonight.

We will still go to Cooper's Falls but after here and another stop along the way.

Thanks to everyone that replied. Good point about the lowest ISO. I'll need to remember to take it off Auto ISO.

Please see above for the new meeting location of COLDWATER MILL still for 10:00am.

There is a possibility a spot may open up as one person has been ill for the last few days and may with draw so keep watching!

I've never understood the "possible interest" section.. since it's full - so why bother even having it and being able to confirm interest?

Because why wouldn't everyone just submit "I'm so there" and back out later - as it seems to be the trend when something comes up.

It actually does serve a purpose... if there were 20 people signed up there, it would indicate that there is a lot of interest, and we might schedule another one for sometime in the near future. Sorta like collecting stats without it being obvious.

Thanks everyone for coming out and exploring the Muskoka area. I had a great time and saw some new places and few we already explored.

Hope everyone enjoyed their day/evening too.

It was great to get into Coldwater Mill and see all the working inside. Laurie has said she'd be glad to open the Mill again for us.

Will have to plan another trip up here again for the fall to go check out the area and get back to the old school house.
