Whoops! 6:30pm... I forget about the title :D

I got everyone's parking requests and thank you very much. If anyone else is sending me parking requests, please PM me by 4pm. If not, I may not be able to secure you free parking. There is metered parking on the street but I can't reserve that.

See you all tonight!

Yes it is... its just east of the condo, past the "house" there. The driveway will take you behind the house and to the back of the condo. There is also another entrance off of Ted Rogers Way southbound just past the contruction barriers.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Justin and Nick :D Very informative session :D The tips on portraiture pose and lighting were a bonus :D I can't wait to do some strobist stuff, still waiting for my RF-602's in the mail :(

Anyway, since there was a bit of discussion of low key portraiture, here's a good tutorial online on the subject:

I was thinking that maybe we can post our best photo and have further discussion on how to make it even better... This was shot with a prime lens 50mm f9.5 1/180sec ISO 100 I guess I was hoping the exif info would include the strobe settings, but I guess I was way off! Any suggestions on how to keep track of your settings for future reference? I believe it was sb900 on the left about 2 1/2feet away with a mini soft box. 1/16th power with a cardboard "guider". On the right a shoot though umbrella 1/16th power @ a distance of next to nothing  lol and another cardboard guider.

Image

So... in this image I see an imbalance in the background,(on the left side) I'm thinking the guider still needed more angling towards the subject. I also think the left strobe should have been pulled away from the subject even a little further...although my camera does not show a blow out I feel the image viewed on computer is on the borderline of blow out. Please correct me if I'm wrong on my assumtions ...I want to LEARN! Thanks again for organizing! :D

Definitely a good photo here. There is a little bit of bleed on the background but it's not a big deal. Don't worry about how it looks on the computer, it may be that it's just at a high brightness level that makes it seem to be over exposed.

A huge thanks goes out to Justin he really pulled out all the stops with the room, refreshments, shooing away the scurity guards and teaching. If this was eBay I'd give him 5 stars and he'd be a power seller.

I'll get my slides posted here (once I go through and remove any copyrighted photos) so you can review them if you like. There are however a myriad of free sources online that are much more thorough than I am.

Time permitting I'd be more than happy to help Justin again, and hopefully we can get more hands-on. Perhaps a portrait class?

-Nick

I couldn't wait, so before I went to sleep, I did a little DIY low-key lighting at home with a table lamp, depth of field is a bit too shallow because I used f/1.8, couldn't use a smaller aperture because there wasn't enough light from the lamp, will probably try to lower the shutter speed and increase the f-stop on my next try.

Anyway, didn't have an angry looking doll, so I burnt in the eyebrows and the eyes in PS

It was really great to meet new faces and seeing old faces too!

I want to thank everyone that came out and I really do hope it was helpful. I would like to say a HUGE thanks to Nick for coming through and being an amazing assistant, presenter, speaker and teacher. He's the real deal folks! and would love to work together anytime

I enjoyed it and judging from the responses, you've all put a big smile on my face to be trying it at home, and checking out your pics in post so quickly! I absolutely love it!

Keep it coming! Would love to see how everyone's shots went!

SuzieSue: Coffee cup looks great! Background looks good on this LCD. I think the power on the speedlites was right, i would have raised the light so the angle would be firing down on the cupcake. no cast of shadow on the cup (i'm nitpicky:D ) >> i really like this image as it looks very promotional. Great way to run with the little project!

Alvin85: your DIY-Angry Bear has made me chuckle for the last 10 minutes straight because I love what you're doing :D Your passion is inspiring! Low ambient light in that dark is hard, and especially at 1.8... even tougher. For me the eyebrows make this image :D

Thanks so much Justin & Nick. This was very informative. I really learned a lot. It's a lot to take in, but I'm definitely don't feel as lost as when I walked in the door.

Looking forward to the next one.

Thank you so much Justin and Nick for the information & hands-on session! I've learned a lot and will practice when my purchase arrives.

SuzieSue, you are actually good with names. You've got 100% there. :) My pleasure for the ride and in fact that's on my way home.

Andrew

Here's my variation on Suzie's shot. This was ISO 159, 1/160, F10, focus distance .67m. Speedlite settings, the same as Suzie's. The muffin has a hot spot, and there could be more separation from the background on the right side of the lid. I would also love to eliminate the shadow cast by the muffin onto the cup. Comments? I have no idea what I'm doing so anything constructive is welcomed.

Definitely can't wait for the next session. Justin and Nick are excellent speakers who compliment each other, who have the passion for sharing their knowledge.

The gel stacking shot came out okay even without a flag. Sunset in a sink. Taken with a Nikon 70-300 lens. ISO 159, 1/160, F7.1, focus distance 3.16 m
