What if one is coming from public transit in T.O. I don't think the Go train goes all the way from Union, does it? Won't it require a bus? The GO schedule is designed for sunburban minds and I can't understand it.

Grindstone Creek Falls It can be precarious to get close and there is some semi-advanced hiking to get to the base of it. If you're not up for that there are other places to shoot it from that are easy-peasy.

Am I gonna break my ankle again at one of your ad-hocs??

If I end up going, I can give you a ride from Old Mill station

WOW!! Excellent. Thanks.

I hope you decide to go. I was wondering why you hadn't committed yet.

Sorry Phil, I fetched a ride myself :D hope you got one too

Since PotatoEye is getting his own ride, can I get a ride with you guys then?

I'm accepting tentative on this one because the weatherman is forecasting some nasty rain for Saturday. It will likely be a game day decision for me weather depending but would love to come out and meet some of you guys and get some waterfall shots. The only other time I've shot some falls was in Maui in 2008 and I didn't have a tripod with me on the hike so they weren't that great.

If I do end up coming, I'll be driving from High Park so I can hook a few people up with a ride. I've got a VW sport wagon so plenty of room for 2-3 more people and the gear in the trunk. I hope the weather holds out!

Hi bsimonian,
Around what time would you know?
Weather Network forecasts 'Cloudy with showers' 1 mm. Waterfalls are best photographed with overcast skies - too many blown highlights in sunny weather.

If that's the case in terms of the best weather to photograph waterfalls then I'm closer to being a confirmed yes. My only concern is that I should with a Canon 40D and in terms of water resistance it's pretty weak. I'm from BC so the rain doesn't really bother me for hikes, I just don't want to ruin my gear.

Likely if you check with me this afternoon I'll have a decision made; I already moved a gym appointment from Sat to next week sometime to be able to go so it's just the rain I'm worried about now...

Just thinking about the rain and although it's only supposed to be 1mm, I'd rather be safe than sorry. Does anybody from the group have experience with these guys? I may just pick one up today at lunch and then confirm my attendance so a few more people can stop worrying about rides.

it's not as weak as you think, I've shot with 40D in rain, no issues unless it's a downpour, bring a towel :D

I just checked The Weather Network and they're calling for light rain in Burlington from about 9AM until noon which is when we'll be at Grindstone Creek. Most of Grindstone has a pretty heavy canopy so we'll be somewhat sheltered there. They claim Hamilton will be partly sunny until about 4PM and St. Catharines (Decew location) is to see showers with possible T-storms off and on most of the afternoon. At least this is what their bone caster has told them. At worst I think we'll be waiting out a passing shower or two but bringing an umbrella won't be a bad idea. My fear is getting stuck in the Stephanie hike in a downpour.

As we well know changing conditions often provide the best light, not necessarily for waterfalls but it's not gonna hurt.

Looks like it would work better than the No Frills plastic bag I have.

In rain, I keep my camera in its bag until I need it. Then I take it out making sure not to get the lens element wet. My 30D has withstood rain of a minute or so. Then I put it back in the bag. I am sure it could withstand much more but I hate getting water on the front lens element. If I mount it on a tripod I'll cover it with a grocery bag to keep it dry as possible and put the camera back in its bag when I don't plan to use it. I'm surprised how weather resistant it is.

I'm going with the expectation of taking some photos. I am not bothered by rain so if it is to wet for photo taking I'll put the camera away and just enjoy the falls.

Thanks for the ride offer but I snagged the last seat in qualdoth

Will we be stopping for lunch along the way tomorrow or should we come armed with snacks to last the day?

it's a good idea to pack some snack, as hiking gets tough and shooting gets long, but in the past we've always stopped for food at some point

After Grindstone we'll hit a nearby Tim's for lunch. After that it's up to you what you bring to eat drink until we have dinner in St. Catharines. It is a long tiring day. Only a high of 18

Might be helpful to print this off:

After Grindstone...

From Aldershot GO Station get on the 403 heading west until Main St. Westin Hamilton. Follow Main St. West until it becomes Wilson Street. About half way up the escarpment, you will come across a small parking area labelled

I'm still up in the air for this event but if I decide to go I can offer rides in the downtown area. I can pickup at union station at 9am and head out from there. Just send me a pm before 9am for my number.

Heh. We got nailed by a storm at Grindstone Creek.

Hope everyone had a good day and got home safe! I'll probably try to do another one in July.

Thanks for organizing Chris. It was great meeting everybody and had fun shooting the falls. I'm gonna try and be disciplined and process these images to post soon. :)

Holy crap that was crazed fun. Might have been even more fun without being saddled by our gear. Been a while since I got that dirty and had that much fun in the mud. Great hiking, scenery and company!!
Thanks for organizing Chris. It was a great memorable trip.
