Some of these trails are slippery! Very! Particularly getting to the base of Webster's! That icy shot above was taken after traversing about 4 metres of completely iced over trail. Albion will probably be a real treat too. Hilton is mostly flat, getting there anyway, but with the snow we've got coming this week it could be a bit of a trek through deep snow to the falls. Awesome I say. Bring your best shoes for winter conditions. Bring gloves, preferably two types, one thin set for using your camera and another warmer set to wear over those in between camera operation. It's to stay cold which is better than warming up and turning sloppy. What does worry me weather wise is the wind. Currently the prediction is SW 30 km/h for the Burlington area (sorta central to all the falls. We're not gonna get sharp trees and flowing water if there's wind, this shot for example:

Image

Notice the blurry plant on the right. Who knows though. It's weather prediction, meteorologists are currently casting bones to give us their opinions. Note, we're not going to the Falls in this shot. We could I guess, it's between Hilton and Webster's in Waterdown. Looks like this in the winter.

Thanks ions for the detailed info and pics. Since I have never hiked in winter, was a bit worried, I guess the regular warm boots is not enough, has to be no slip as well? Beautiful winter falls, very attempting.

Just about everyone should be able to participate as long as they are prepared. If you come unprepared no whining will be tolerated. :D

I've put myself as a maybe, and will firm up as we get closer to the weekend. If I'm coming I'll have a spare space for 2 in my car (Central North).

So you have an idea of what I'm going on about when I say the Webster's Falls area has some nice scenery:

That was taken just a minute downstream from the falls a little earlier this month. I think it's worthwhile.

Hey Janetliz - I live in Mississauga and may be going but it'll be weather permitting since my car isn't the best for winter driving. I should know by about Thursday what the weather is looking like and could use the company for the drive!

I don't have them. I think only the organizers do. I'm just a schmoe who sets up events. If I remember correctly they're $3. I'm not sure if anyone currently listed as coming or maybe is coming would have them.

Hey Ions,
Is there an update on the falls that you are planning on going to?
How about sticking Sherman Falls in between Tiffany and Albion?
I'll definitely skip Hilton, but will hopefully get to meet up with you guys at Websters or Tiffany (depending on when I roll out of bed, eh).

Hi Ions

With only a couple of days to Saturday can you firm up the meeting time and place please?

Updated the original post with firm plans. Also see it below. Please take note of the request to post if you need a lift or can provide one.

Details:

What: Waterfalls: Winter Edition
When: Saturday, February 05
Time: 9:30AM until approximately 6PM Then food in Ancaster. (Sunset is approximately 5:30 and there will be people who want to shoot right up to and slightly after that)
Where: Undecided. West end cause that's where the Falls are silly. Probably Hilton Falls.
Bring: Dress warm! Seriously. Good walking/hiking shoes. Camera gear. ND Filters are a big big plus. Tripod.

Take a look at the previous trip(s) and if you don't like those Falls suggest some falls to start around the Hamilton area we can consider.

Itinerary:

Hilton Falls 9:30AM

By the time the whole group that is coming to Hilton arrives, we get in there, shoot, hike back out I think it'll be at least 12:30. People may want a Tim's or something like that along the way to Webster's. After Webster's there is no set timeline. Each falls will take as long as it takes for a general group agreement that we've all got what we came for.

Webster's Falls
Tiffany Falls
Sherman Falls
Albion Falls
and maybe if there's time...
Felker's Falls

We'll start at Hilton Falls. It's easy to get to and has the most walking although not too bad. With all the snow we got recently, the west end got more, it will be a hike through snow. Wear good boots and double up your socks! We will then head to Webster's Falls and the Webster's Falls area. The creek flowing from the falls is very pretty right now so a shoot of the falls followed by a shortish hike is a good idea. If you're not up to this hike, which can be challenging at times, you can walk over to the Tew's Falls observation deck. That's an easy walk and neat to look at but not particularly photographically appealing from the top. We WILL NOT be making a run at Lower Tew's or the Base of Upper Tew's. That's an event of its very own which I may create for another time. It's a very tough go though. Anyway. After Websters we'll head to Tiffany Falls. As per requested by Mike we'll hit Sherman Falls then Albion Falls in Hamilton Mountain. I think 5 is enough as it will likely be freaking cold and a bit slower going. If we need another we can add Felker's Falls. I will print an itinerary with small maps, GPS coordinates and mobile numbers so we don't have the same mix ups as last time. Unless there is a big change in the confirmed list I'm gonna print about 12-15 of these. If you're not coming to Hilton Falls PM me your email and I will send you a PDF of the itinerary. They'll go out Friday night at the latest.

If you are driving please state where you're coming from and if you have room in your car for another. A couple people that live in the city have PM'd me asking about rides and since I'll already be out that way I can't help. If you need a ride or can provide one please post that you do. I will have room in my car for 1 passenger provided they meet me in Burlington.

Hopefully the weather cooperates and stays cold. Current forecast is for flurries accumulating to 1cm, wind 15km/h and a high of -2

I have never been to any of the falls. Where are we meeting at Hilton Falls? Parking lot? Information Center? Please advise. TIA.

Parking lot. Just look for the group of people standing around with camera bags. Oh! That reminds me. If someone is manning the booth there may be a parking fee. I'll look into it in a bit and post. Webster's has a electronic pay station. I forget the fee for that. I will look into exact amounts soon.

Very likely...

Now that I've shifted myself to confirmed. I have one tentative passenger and offering one more. Starting from the Don/York Mills area.

If there is someone manning the booth on Saturday admission to Hilton Falls will be at least $6.25. I say at least because they only have 2010 rates posted on their Web site.

Webster's Falls is $6 per car.

It would help to know which fall that is a pic of. I think Hilton freezes over like that and if it has you're welcome to stand behind it.

Let me state this now to all who plan on going: I am not responsible for what happens to yourself or your gear in any way! I repeat: I am not responsible for what happens to yourself or your gear in any way!

Felker's is closed for maintenance so that will no longer be our last, if we need it, waterfall. Thank you Tim for letting me know! I don't think we're gonna need it but I have a super secret waterfall in Waterdown that will substitute if we have time.

Haha, good catch! I guess the tripod can also be your third or fourth leg.
