Details:

What: Niagara Glen Photohike & Niagara Falls Night Shoot
When: Saturday October 22, 2011
Time: 12:30 PM
Where: Niagara Glen parking lot on the Niagara Parkway
Cost: Parking fees may apply
Bring: camera/tripods/etc
Directions: Take the QEW from Toronto. After crossing over the Garden City Skyway in St. Catharines, take the first exit on your left to Highway 405 to Queenston. Take the Stanley Avenue exit on the right and at the lights at the top of the ramp turn left onto Stanley Avenue, driving back over the 405. At the intersection of Townline Road and Portage Road turn right on Portage. At the intersection of Portage Road and Niagara Parkway, a Traffic Circle, you turn right and follow the Niagara Parkway to the Niagara Glen which will be on your left just after you pass the Butterfly Conservatory.

Details:
This event is a two parter.

The plan is to hike and shoot in the natural areas of the Niagara Glen in the afternoon, a wonderful jewel of a place often overlooked. We can hike through an amazing landscape right to the edge of the Niagara River rapids below the whirlpool. Hopefully we will catch some of the fall colours.

After hiking in the Glen for a few hours we will take a break and have dinner at Zappis Pizza which was a restaurant that we visited after the Butterfly trip in the winter that seemed to be a hit.

http://www.zappispizza.com/

After dinner, for those who have the energy and the desire, we will head to the Falls and possibly Clifton Hill for some night shooting. Sunset should be around 6:25 PM.

If you can offer a ride or need a ride please post and work it out.

Daryl

Is hiking course difficult?
How long does it gonna take?
Since I have knee problem, if the trail has lots of up and down or hilly I may not be able to make it or may be very slow.
But if it's just walking course, I really like to join.

I would characterize hiking in the Glen as difficult due to some steep sections and the need to negotiate some steep paths and cut stone stairs.

The Glen requires a lot of uphill and downhill walking and right at the start is a stair case from the edge of the gorge. My experience in the Glen is that it is a workout.

I would expect to spend about three hours in the Glen working our way to the river, along the river and then back up to the top.

I am definitely hoping to be able to do this, but it depends on whether I get asked to work that day.

No firm plan around time or place for the second part of the day. If you PM me I can send you my cell number and you can call to find us.

Do you have a list of potential spots for night shots?

No real shooting plan. Start at the falls area and then likely walk over to the lights of Clifton Hill. It will really depend on the mood and desires of the people. Its going to be pretty flexible.

Thanks for coming out Janet. I hope you had a good time, took some good photos and found the Glen to your liking. A pretty good day I thought. I don't think we could have had a much better night for shooting around the falls.
